Because it's dangerous. They're traveling slower than the flow of traffic, they're more difficult to see than another car, a lot of them don't follow traffic laws, and they are completely unprotected if they get into a crash with a car.
I like riding a bike. It's fun and it's good exercise, but cyclists should not be on the road with cars. Even bike lanes are a poor compromise. They should either be on separate bike paths, or on the sidewalk.

The issue is that cyclists are entitled douchebags. Not sure where you are from, but in the US, the roads are paid for by gasoline taxes. If you aren't paying to use and maintain the roads, you have no business being on them. What we need are dedicated lanes that are separate from the car lanes and inaccessible to cars through the use of barriers or curbs so that eveyone is safe. Then make cyclists pay a bike registration fee to maintain those lanes. Watch as those lanes sit completely unused onceit costs money, and then you'll see who is entitled.

as a cyclist myself, I can tell you we get equal hate for being on the pavement as we do for being on the road. I've literally had someone Yell "you should be riding that on the road" whilst he was standing on top of the painted sign marking the cycle lane.
I've also been told to ride it on the pavement by motorists, I ride over to the side to let cars pass when I can but when I need to get into the lane to be visible for a maneuver it will inevitably annoy motorists as I slow their day down by a full 5-10 seconds.
You can't win on a bike, I ride one because I don't need to travel far, I can't afford a car, it's some of the little exercise I get and I enjoy it as well. There's something satisfying about getting somewhere under your own steam instead of just pressing some pedals.

I live in the country and there are a few two lane roads where cyclists love to ride near the bluffs and river.
A few years back there was some big shit-fit about cars going to fast around cyclists and being dicks to them. For sure that is stupid - there's no reason to risk hurting someone just because they were on the bike.
A couple of weeks later, the state police set up some surveillance and other stuff and issued a bunch of tickets - all to the cyclists.
When I ride near my house, I don't have head phones on, I'm constantly looking for cars, I don't ride during times when it is going to be busy, and if two cars are going to in opposite directions and will cross anywhere near me, I'll get off the road so I don't have to worry about being hit and they don't have to worry about hitting me.

No one cares about how fit they are. Cyclists are a hazard on the road. As many have stated they DO NOT follow traffic safety and DO NOT obey the same traffic laws that cars are beholden to. They ride slower than traffic which creates a hazard and a bottleneck and they are also not riding for transportation they are riding for recreation.
If you want to get your fit on and you aren't going from point A. to point B. Then go to a park or a trail or go to a rural area or a scenic bike path. You can ride there in safety and comfort. Or hell ride on the sidewalk. Don't take your bike to a busy byway and go in large groups and cause a mess for all the other motorists who are trying to get shit done like go to work or get food to cook for dinner.
Can you imagine staying late for work, being tired and then being stuck behind a pack of assholes who are just slowing down everyone behind them.
