Wrist Watch Check Thread.

/b/, what watch are you currently wearing? Oh, and if you do not wear a watch, you are NOT man. You are an underage faggot – in which case you should be fucking BANNED – or you are a man-child.

>pic related: my watch (Rolex 16610 D Serial)
>>
You can't see the time in your phone?
>>
>>701084384

It's more convenient to see what time it is by looking at the watch on my wrist, which is easier to access compared to a cell in a pocket. In addition to that, I enjoy watches for their beauty and the automatic movements.

You can't read an analog watch?
>>
Bump
>>
>>701084152

I used to wear a 1960s Rolex until I had a couple of people mention it, one a FedEx driver remarking "That's an old one!" and the other a Mexican workers @ a car dealership commenting "Nice watch."

So I put it away. Don't wear it any more.
>>
>>701085024

Why would you put away a watch because people comment on it?
>>
I can read analog just fine but you became a target for robbers and shit by having a couple Hundred dollars at you wrist
>>
>>701085246
Because it's clearly also valuable to be noticed. Meaning a higher probability of someone trying to take it. And even if that didn't happen, would you want to accidentally bash your wrist into something and wreck this old, valuable watch everyone notices?

I don't think so.
>>
>>701084152
While I understand the appeal, declaring that not using outdated technology makes you not a man is pretty backwards. I think it just makes you a man who values tradition over progress and advancement. You'll be the sort of old person who refuses to acknowledge modern technology.
>>
>>701085539
Gotta agree, should still wear it for nice occasions, weddings, fine dining, meetings. That sort of thing. No point having something if it has no use, no matter how nice it is.
>>
>>701085447

I have worn this watch out hundreds of fucking times. No one has every said nice watch, nice Rolex, etc. No one even notices. Besides, I don't live a nigger infested town or a fucking ghetto. I also don't leave the house with a gun, which I can legally carry in my state.

>>701085539
>Meaning a higher probability of someone trying to take it.

That's why you do not wear it around trash. If you're going to dinner at a nice restaurant, etc, wear it.

>And even if that didn't happen, would you want to accidentally bash your wrist into something and wreck this old, valuable watch everyone notices?

Preserving a vintage. Understandable.

>>701085573

Nice assumptions. I love tech. I'm always watching videos and reading articles about new tech. But, as already mentioned, an analog watch is convenient for telling time. It doesn't require a charger; it won't run out of battery life. It looks great on the wrist. Mechanical movements are divine.

If it's simply for functionality, you don't need a fancy watch. A simple one would do. You're just a bit of an aesthetic douchebag, it's not the worst thing that you could be. Dudes rockin' ice and unnecessary trinkets bling tend to attract materialistic women, it's not a bad route.

>If it's simply for functionality, you don't need a fancy watch.

Any shoe will do. Why wear Nike or another name brand? It you're going to wear or own something, it might as well be something you like, coupled with being a quality product.

Most watches below 1k are shitters.

> Dudes rockin' ice and unnecessary trinkets bling tend to attract materialistic women, it's not a bad route.

Bought this Sub AFTER dating my girlfriend, an Asian, for 3 years. She's not materialistic; doesn't even like jewelry. I wear the watch for me, not to impress others.

>>

I wore a watch from age 6 to 13. Once I was old enough for a phone, the watch became obsolete. Your opinion lacks reason and seems to be based on a superficial need to pacify your insecurities that you cannot step up to the mental abs emotional state of manhood, so you assign the quality to an out dated piece of technology than childishly mock others for not being regressive fools who waste money on boy jewelry.
>>
>>701086382
If it's simply because you have a fondness for mechanical precision and the workings of a watch, I understand that too. That's a hobby, a taste, an inclination. "This is what I consider tasteful, if you don't you're a manchild". I don't understand this though, it /does/ sound like the sort of person who buys name brand swag for no reason other than to say he owns name brand swag and look down on others who don't.

Subjective.

Many people still wear watches to tell time because:

>they find it easier to access
>doesn't need a charger
>years of use for before needing service
>always with you; always on wrist (unlike a phone you can forget)
>fashion accessory
>history of specific brands and models
>investment

>Your opinion lacks reason

Just proved otherwise.

>seems to be based on a superficial need to pacify your insecurities that you cannot step up to the mental abs emotional state of manhood, so you assign the quality to an out dated piece of technology than childishly mock others for not being regressive fools who waste money on boy jewelry.

>don't think I can spend that much on a Seiko. Call me a brand snob.
Ok... "you're a watch snob"

Seiko traces its history to 1882 and made its first clock in 1892.

Rolex by comparison was founded in London in 1905, and moved to Geneva in 1919, so wasn't even a Swiss watchmaker.

So by rights Seiko has a stronger heritage, but Rolex is a clever marketing story.

More accurately, as already mentioned, a brand snob. Rolex and Tudor (maybe Omega) are the only luxury brands I will buy into. I like the history, designs, names, innovations, etc. Don't forget, the world of horology owes a lot to Rolex AND Seiko.

Seiko is a great brand. Not knocking them. I like the Grand Seikos. But I'd rather have a Date-Just over a dressy GS, or a Sub over a that GS diver. It's more than the brand – it's also about the designs.

Watches aren't handmade anymore and every "Swiss" brand uses the same printed movement. There is no point in bragging about a mass produced Rolex or Omega. They're shitty and you're shitty for thinking you're special.

Unless you're sporting a $50k Brietling then your watch is a piece of shit just like every other watch.

Real men wear $200 automatic Casio's while they turn wrenches or build shit.

I'm 48 years old and I haven't worn a watch since the 1980s. Nor do I own a cellphone or a car. I don't have a fridge or a stove, and I take sponge baths in the sink because I have no shower. All my worldly possessions can fit into a single backpack. The only thing of value I possess is a small collection of smoking pipes which I've collected over the years; smoking down by the river as I watch the cargo ships thrum by is about the only entertainment I need.

I live a life of voluntary simplicity, and that includes not being a slave to the hours of the day or the days of the week. Bragging about how expensive your watch is, is like boasting about how thick and heavy your chains are.

"My days were not days of the week, bearing the stamp of any heathen deity, nor were they minced into hours and fretted by the ticking of a clock; for I lived like the Puri Indians, of whom it is said that 'for yesterday, today, and tomorrow they have only one word, and they express the variety of meaning by pointing backward for yesterday forward for tomorrow, and overhead for the passing day.' This was sheer idleness to my fellow-townsmen, no doubt; but if the birds and flowers had tried me by their standard, I should not have been found wanting." -- Henry David Thoreau, _Walden_

But, you ignorant one, you can't buff out deep dings and dents; you can, but you are going to lose a lot of metal, destroying the original shape AND value of the watch.

The Rolex Sub ref. 16610 D serial is my favorite watch in the fucking world. It's minty, and I want to keep it that way.

Classic look and smaller face watches are on the rise as men with class try distance themselves from douches that wear dinner plate size watches.
Smaller face classic watches were 'manly' enough for guys who fought in the trenches in WWI and II, so they sure as shit are manly enough for any modern mad with style.

Understandable. I can't wear a watch beyond 40mm. The classic sub isn't bulky; the new one, on the other hand, kinda is thanks to the thick clasp and maxi case.

I like classic watches for their size and appearance. I'd like a dress piece, but I don't dress up often. Hence why a sub suits me.

I've spent my life in service to my community. I'm an activist and organizer with 25 years of experience. I'm frequently in the media. In fact, there's a Wikipedia article about me. What really bothers you isn't that I'm enjoying my life of voluntary simplicity without a watch or material possessions, but that you're having a lousy, unhappy life while you try to fill the hole inside you with "stuff."

There's no secret to my happiness. People since based Diogenes of Sinope have been trying to tell you folks the same thing: simplify, simplify. Life is so much nicer when you don't have "things" weighing you down. Boil your life down to the necessities and a couple of simple luxuries -- I have my pipes and my computer, for example -- and you can be just as content as I am.
>>
>>701091974

I see where you are coming from. Good on you. I used to work on my own motorcycles. Rebuilding engines and general repairs. Don't blame your laziness on being ADD. ADD deals with the ability to narrow ones focus, not to read. ADD people (like myself) are perfectly capable of reading an entire article in one sitting, let alone a short paragraph.

Somewhere around the late 80s or early 90s I was packing up my highschool year books, comic book collection, family photo albums, and so on in preparation for a move and thought, I haven't looked at any of this stuff in years. Why am I spending time and money carting it around? So I tossed it all in the trash. And you know what? I've never missed it, not once. Everything of value I carry inside my head already. It's not that watch which makes you happy, it's what the watch represents. You can keep that without needing to worry about the watch. Imagine how free it would feel to never again have to worry about losing it or damaging it. Why do you think I'm spending my time in this thread? Do you think it's any benefit to *me*? I want people to be free and happy for their sake, not mine.

Of course. Humans value money over everything. They seem to forget that no matter how much they have they still have no money. When their spending increases to accommodate a lifestyle where they have a higher income they still end up in debt. This is because people think having a watch makes you a man. That's why the women that date materialistic asses complain that they never make them cum.

I sure love the 2013 Baselworld model of the Daytona but 30k is nothing I would spend on a watch.

The new 2016 models look nice too but I don't think I will "upgrade" to them - my Daytona was sort of a reward for a personal milestone, so it's more than just a watch to me.

That's because of demand. Sellers can't keep them in the stores. Rolex intentionally slows production. Price goes up. Hopefully more will hit the market and the demand will slow down, forcing retailers to drop the absurd prices.

>How do you like the 2013 Baselworld and 2016 models?

I like the classics, which is why I own an older Sub, not a new one. Honestly, I don't like wear Rolex is going.
