The question is clear. "how is that possible?"
so he said how it was possible
It does, because the answer is clear. There is a true and valid answer to the question. It shouldn't be a trick question, it doesn't say "assume the pizzas are the same size"
The teacher is wrong in this instance because the student answered correctly how the pizza could be bigger. The correct answer shouldn't be "it isn't possible" unless there is more to the question.
the teacher marked the kid's answer as wrong. so even if they were both right, the teacher should kick rocks. And the teacher is wrong, because the teacher doesn't realize that a lower fraction of something bigger can be a larger amount.
no... both are not correct...
2*2 is done first, so you have 20/5*4
/ and * have equal ordering, so 20/5 is 4, 4*4 is 16.
wtf is the old way? ignoring order of opperations, and doing 2*2*5, then deviding 20/20?
thats wrong. math has 1 way of doing it. i feel bad for the future of america if this is whats being taught
By old way, you mean "right way". Common Core is the single most retarded thing I have ever seen, and it actively contributes to the ongoing stereotype that Americans are all retarded.
since it is 20 / 5 (2 * 2) you have to do 5 * (2 * 2) before you divide by 20 because there is no "*" shown between 5 and (2 * 2) so you have to take it as a whole number first which is divided by 20
>What are the rules of PEMDAS
>What is left to right
Are you fucking retarded? It won't take any less time to cut the board just because you are cutting it more than once. If it takes 10 minutes to cut the board once it will clearly take 20 minutes to cut it twice, into 3 pieces. Fuckface.
But there is no paranthesis at that point as you've simplified it as much as possible so it becomes
Since multiplication and division are on equal footing, you go from left to right, giving you 16. You don't factor a paranthesis, you eliminate it.
Thats not a fraction, you numbnuts, and if you were to turn it into a fraction it would be (20/5). which (20/5)*(2*2) = (4)*(4) = 16. If you come up with one you were either taught incorrectly or are simply retarded.
This so much, remember when Russia bombed Georgia and muricans were loosing their minds?
Remember when they bought the whole "Sadam had direct involvement in 9/11, here are some JPGs to proove it!"
Though I think the best evidence to support the idea that Americans are all retarded is that they let Jews run their country.
Poor form Americunts, poor form indeed.
I did this on some online class for my college
The error message is on a tiny pop up, the rest doesn't give alot of context
it made me fail a test and redo an hour of work
yeah, thats fine... to be honest the question is poorly worded, although intuition is there to exaplin it, the concept of rewriting problems into partitions vs objects doesnt come into corriculum until descrete mathamatics.
also sometimes called the fencepost problem.
That's why I have traditional knobs in my house.
>your games are slowing the computer down get rid of them!
parentheses are to contain a separate but relevant equation as written in the root problem, the sum does not gain any priority over the rest of the quation once you have it. It's 20/5x4, which equals 16, no wonder you fucking apes lost the space race
this is spacial relation and the kid answered correctly.
the student judging by their handwriting, is still a young child under double digit age. you cannot ask a child who forgot to put "n" at the end of "than" to proof a test. he's going to assume the test is being honest with him.
he reasoned correctly that the only possible way 2/3 of a pizza is greater than 5/6 of a pizza would be if the 2/3 pizza was larger to start with.
that's spacial relation problem solving.
so the question says when is 2/3 > 5/6.
and he says when you have 2/3 of 2 and only 5/6 of 1.
and the teacher marked it wrong. he's not being a smartass. the test was being a smartass.
That's not exactly how it works....
It took her 10 minutes to make one cut....
So, if she takes another board and cuts it twice (into three pieces), at the exact same rate (10m = 1 cut), then it will take her 20 minutes to make 2 cuts...
He didn't answer it correctly. The pizza could be 1% bigger, and the guy still would not have eaten as much. The is a specific size bigger that the pizza would have to be in order to insure that the guy ate more pizza. The kid is wrong because he did not include this size ratio.
I hope you faggots calling "1" and the teachers answers correct aren't trolling. If you're serious, you're the most retarded people ever.
Teacher IS right, and 4chan is autistic. If she cut a half of the board into half again, cut would be half as long and take half as long to make. I guess you could argue she cut the board flat and just was really, really slow, but that doesn't make sense.
For those of us who actually care about math, there are two possible expressions here:
20/(5*(2*2)) = 1,
which ever you mean is essentially down to interpretation of whether division is first or the multiplication is. Unambiguous notation and unclear rules are the issues.
In practice, one would evalute left to right, so (20/5)*(2*2)=16 would be more likely assumed.
>Misogyny is also rampant on the chan boards
>An activist trying to change society
lol what the fuck do I know about maths...
"i was only pretending to give out a compliment, which i will now retract because i'm retarded"
i'm not even the same anon i just thought i'd take advantage of the situation lol you just got owned
7 years. 7 years I've been on this site and this photo has never been surpassed in terms of how much it makes me rage. I sincerely hope this garbage procreated and it's offspring is raped by a pack of niggers in front of it.
I saw those, then I saw a 25 foot one for ten dollars that just said "HDMI 25' " a brand logo and barcode and a warranty for a year. Which do you suspect I bought.
>the Xbox one cost over $40 before tax
see, the problem is: there is no such thing, as a "implied multiplication".
The problem with this problem is, that its simply badly written, thats why it can be confusing.
20/5(2*2) is something no mathematician would ever write, its either 20/(5[2*2]) = 1 or (20/5)*(2*2) =16.
No fuck off with your "old way" and "common shit"
Tom Cruise, I woke up and I've been sleepy all day my anus hurts. Its not funny. It will happen again tonight, I already know that. And if I catch him, I'll kill him and I don't want to! YOU DO IT!
PLEASE TOM CRUISE
I WANT TO LIVE, He's getting scared that I told someone, he might be even worse tonight! I don't know! This feeling I'm having, that there's bruises left over, or that he might rape a ten year old little sister of might instead of me,
for only a thousand dollars, he'd take a hymen.
That's not good, that NOT OKAY.
IM HURT TODAY,
But my little sister hasn't has her period yet.
She could die all in one night!
Please help us Tom Cruise, please help.
What if my friend who's a lookalike couldn't get away with the murder or help me send him to prison
Please Tom Cruise.
>being a microshill
Face the facts, xbox only exists because they paid off bungie for their halo game that originally was supposed to be for MACs.
Without Halo, xbox would be dead and forgotten right now.
But i can put less care into it.
"I could care less"
Saying, "i couldn't care less" is saying you could care more meaning you are concerned with that opinion.
I wasn't concerned with the opinion.
might have been subscripted?
If you know latex, you'd at least understand how there could be issues. Regardless, yes, shitty instruction tools, although they have existed since the dawn of time.
Of course it would take a woman 10 goddamn minutes to saw a board into two pieces.
If anything it is teaching boys early that women are useless for manual labor and that their place is in the kitchen.

Have you fuckers ever seen an arithmetic problem before? There is no ambiguity here, you just don't know the order of operations.
Both are correct
-Brackets/Parentheses/Braces/Unary operators done in order of nestedness
-Multiplication and division, done from left to right
-Addition and subtraction, done from left to right
Graduating High school and not knowing that subtraction and division are not commutative.
There is no precedence between the two, hence pemdas, bedmas or whichever fucking one you have can still be correct. They are the same 'tier', they come before additon and subtraction, which are also on the same 'tier'. You go left to right when dealing with division/multiplication and you go left to right when dealing with addition/subtraction. No trolling, no baiting, it just is.
Both of these are retarded. If my kids come home with bullshit like this on their schoolwork there will be a problem, and it will make national news. Teachers like this are why Americans are so fucking stupid now.
ofcourse you can, because there is a "implied" multiplication there. BUT, what I meant was, that there is no difference in implied, and normal mulitplication (as stated by >>700718781)
It doesnt behave any different, you still go from left to right, following the order of operations.
The problem is still badly written since it can be misunderstood, which should NEVER happen
doing work on mymathlab right now, and i have to admit it doesnt seem as bad as people make it appear. then again, im doing calc 3 and there arent many answers that require infinity, coordinates, or interval notation, which seems to be where mymathlab fails.
You are fucking retarded.
PEMDAS and BEDMAS are the same thing and Multiplication and Division are done from left to right. It doesn't matter which order they are in the acronym. If multiplication comes before the division in the equation, you do it first and vice versa.
I lost my shit.
Fuck this earth.
>at least going off memory of what I was taught
In this equation, two numbers are being divided, 20, and 5(2*2), 5(2*2) is essentially one term, because there's no multiplication sign explicitly written between the five and the bracket, it's part of the same term, thus the operation of multiplication between the two must be done first for them to be treated as equally whole.
20 / 5(2*2)
>could be written as
>the inside of the bracket is equal to 4, and 4*5 is 20... so...
I could be completely wrong here... but that's the best I can explain it.
there are plenty of things that should make you feel bad for the future of 'Murica.
Are you serious? It takes one cut to make out of one piece 2 pieces. It takes another cut to make out of it 3 pieces.
I'm sure you one of those guys saying in iq thread that you are 140 points
It's not, i'm a math teacher you shit fuck.
Have you never seen a word problem before? Nothing about the kid's answer is even remotely wrong, and that teacher should be punished in some way for such a shit type question. Since your a math guy I will repeat the question and see if you aren't retarded. One kid eats 5/6 of a pizza, another kid eats 4/6 of pizza, how is it possible for kid two to eat more pizza? If kid two has a larger pizza, would it, under any circumstances, be possible for him to eat more pizza despite eating a smaller fraction of his pizza?
No, couldn't care less is basically saying you could not give a single fuck, that nothing matters less. COULD care less means you could, well, care a bit less if you tried - it's not the most insignificant thing. See what I mean, maybe it's just an American v england thing. Just seems odd to us is all.
wtf? who does that?
Oh, yeah, pussies.
Actually here is how you get 15 minutes.
Imagine cutting a perfect square, 1 foot by 1 foot, straight down the middle, leaving you with two rectangle shaped pieces. This 1 foot long cut took you 10 minutes. Leaving you with to pieces that are 6" by 1 ft.
Next cut, you cut one of the rectangle pieces in half, the narrow direction, so you only have to cut 6" instead of 12". 6" of cutting time takes 5 minutes.
So, you have one piece 6"12", and two pieces that are 6"x6".
With total cuts required, one 12" cut, and one 6" cut, that require 15 minutes of sawing to do.
No the problem is people are simplifying the paranthesis, then not eliminating them, which is the point of simplifying them to begin with. There's no one that is decent at math that would see it as:
Because the paranthesis is already eliminated giving you
Which is 16.
anyway, im interested in whether you are taking that course or teach it. because i am taking it with a prof right now who cant do basic algebra to save her life. thank fucking god its a summer course so im doing most of the work on my own.
I'm down, tomorrow night at the broken down taco bell. Bring a pogo stick, a tub of "I cannot believe it's not butter" and a bag of random legos.
rage because the
>authority's opinion of a vague
>purposefully obtuse question
undermined the kid's correct answer without explaining how
>the authority's answer
>automatically supersedes the kid's logic
>reflecting that the kid isn't wrong
>Are you fucking retarded?
Clearly since the board has already been cut in half any additional cuts will take half the time. ie 10 minutes becomes 5 minutes because the board is 1/2 as thick!
This entire thread. I blame notation. The associativity of multiplication and addition in a field leading to sloppy by efficient notation (dropping parentheses). It makes expressions simpler, but for people who just memorized rules--90% of this thread, it leads to something that requires _debating_, jesus christ.
We have failed society.
Yes, the teacher is absolutely incorrect in this situation.
I accuse you of being a teacher yourself, since you cannot believe a teacher would err.
hurr durr durpy durrr
5/6ths of a 10 inch pizza v 4/6ths of an 18 inch pizza, big one has more area = kid is right, no contest question is retarded caus pizzas sizes were not stated in the question, the reasonableness badge is awarded if the kid don't turn up the day after the result is given carrying an Uzi.
>Common Core is the single most retarded thing I have ever seen
I'm actually (and seriously) a fan.
American primary schools don't teach math today. They teach calculation.
It's not important to be able to multiply numbers quickly. It's much more important to know what multiplication is on a fundamental, intuitive level.
this is not a spacial relation question
it states its facts and the teacher made a mental error
if one length takes 10 minutes why would another presumably even length take less?
the question does not include peripheral content, and this content should not be surmised by the answerer
