We have a reasonable minimum wage but we support those in the lower brackets who have children or special needs such as compensations for high rent. The allowance is per kid and things like higher education is heavily subsidized or free for all citizens so no-one is denied that right due to circumstances that are no fault of their own, such as socio-economic status.
So instead of earning 15 per hour to be able to support your family and see college kids blow it all on useless stuff, everyone earns 10 but those with children or higher rent get compensated with special allowances.
America wants a high minimum wage because one can't sell things like

That's why we have social housing instead of rent control. Basically huge non-profit organisations tasked by the Dutch government to build low-cost housing in areas with a shortage of that. There is a max level defined yearly, which is currently around 750€ for a 4 bedroom house (provided you are a family, not just some guy wanting a big house).
Sure we have waiting lists but those are being adressed, and in the end everyone who can't afford private rents can rely on these houses. I was raised in one and I had a wonderfull childhood. 10 mins by bike to city centre and railway station, walking distance from a local forest and shopping centre and playgrounds where nessecary. Not to forget front and back-yard and ample street parking.
And the beauty is that the neighbourhood was half home-owners and half social housing, so no concentration of low incomes in a particular area.
It's not uncommon for university teachers and a migrant family to live in the same street or flat.
