The issue here is that his is the study of brains, and while the brain makes the person, the connection between the brain and the person isn't particularly well known, and the connection between the person and the people is pretty fuzzy too. Reading the post by rawstory.com I found that whoever thought of the "Dunning-Kruger effect is why people are voting for Trump" literally has no idea what the Dunning-Kruger effect actually is.
The effect is to prove that you convince yourself that you aren't "unskilled" and so you compare yourself to others and your brain automatically associates your skill to being equal if not greater than their's.
Furthermore, the second part of the effect, is the opposite where you have someone who is actually very skilled at something who assumes that whoever he interacts with will be just as skilled as he is.
Literally has nothing to do with the idea that information "isn't getting to their heads," which is how the article describes it. The real Dunning-Kruger effect in this situation, instead, has everything to do with how they perceive Trump as being "a person of the people," whereas he's not. He's actually better than everyone.
The opposite phenomenon happens when liberals look at Hillary. They think that she's "all powerful" and "can't do anything wrong," as proven by the many scandals she was involved with that people just gloss over. Instead of thinking she's a "person of the people" they think she's a goddess. I believe that's also why they don't see Trump as being better than her, because nothing CAN be better than her in their minds. It happens a lot when you look at the Liberal side. Obama included; all the republicans were much more qualified than Obama was, but "he's a godsend."

If you don't point out Dunning-Kruger then you can make any argument based on fact.
