seinfeld thread

I've been watching a few seasons of seinfeld recently because I've got too much time and I'm super bored.

What is it about this show? why was it such a gread succes in the 90s?

all the humor and the stories are based on the main characters either:
- being selfish assholes caring about their own advantage only
- being super cheap and caring on money only
- lying for their own advantage and tryin to cover up lies
- being complete cowards
- nagging and screaming all the time if things don't turn out exactly how they want to
- generally acting as jewish as possible
(or all of the above combined)

inb4 "then why did u watch several seasons of it faggit!?"
btw I'm wathcing season5 right now...

>jews

>why was it such a gread succes in the 90s?
then op goes and lists exactly why it was a "gread" success. Best show ever btw

>>
>>697907705
it was different, then.

that's like watching Aliens and being like "Wow, space marines? how generic"

Or LoTR and being like "Orcs and Elves? Liek THAT hasn't been done before"

Seinfeld sort of set the stage for what a modern sitcom is like.

>>697907835
why would people watch a show just to hate the main characters? (in fact I do. and because I'm reeeally bored and out of shows to watch)
>>

I think this was already done in the 80s...

it's alright, but the Laugh Track ruins it. if a show has to tell when to laugh, then it's not funny.
that's why Curb your Enthusiasm is the better Larry David creation

but nothing beats the Greatest Show Of All Time

By the way, you're not always supposed to agree with or believe in the main character. If he's doing something stupid, it's because the writers made him do something stupid, not because everyone involved in the show was like "yeah, that'd be smart! lets watch a show about a group of friends that are always making the right choices and never get into wacky-but-still-realistic situations!"

now THAT would be a show about nothing

Every main char but Jerry was an extreme char of a certain eemotion.
Jerry was the normie weird enough to befriend these idiots and draw humorous comedy from.
Always got fucked bc too much of one sin/emotion fails you, and always got sucked in to their shit and got indecicive/anxious/afraid/etc.
Funny look on life. And a look, honestly, about nothing. Bc we're all meaningless, just accumulating experiences.

Also because it was a show about "nothing," they had creative license to explore the most ridiculous of human behavior and situations. It was done in a way no show had done before. Many of us can still see ourselves or our friends in some of the crazy behavior on that show. I mean hell look at the crazy shit Kramer did on that show. All the selfish antics of George K. That stuff is still funny and outlandish. Because the show was about nothing, they had the freedom to go out and do these ridiculous plots that you'd never be able to do on a regular sitcom --at least up until then.

no, the fact that the characters are assholes is kind of the point. that's why things somewhat rarely turn out great for them.
same thing with curb your enthusiasm, which is from Larry David.
I kind of thought the characters in HIMYM were all spoiled, inconsiderate assholes. Barney was great when there were no pretensions about him, he was just an asshole. But as his character became more sympathetic (meaning you were SUPPOSED to like him) I just hated him more and more, because he was this unbelievably, disgustingly rich asshole who was a total ingrate about how incredibly good his life is, and the same went with Ted. He has 2 unbelievably great friends, one decent one who always makes nights out incredible, and all he can do is cry and whine because he can't find "the one". Give me a break.

Seinfeld kept it in check. All the characters were losers, at least to some degree, and each were flawed, while likable. That show did "awkward" humor in an original way, and every character had lucky episodes, and unlucky ones, and part of the humor and irony was that rarely did any of them earn their good or bad fortune, it was all chance. Lots of times the characters would get screwed, but usually every episode had one or two characters who lucked out and hit the jackpot.

I personally think there were a shitload of weak episodes in Seinfeld, and his standup bits are almost never funny. But just about every episode had at least one or two good gags, and there are a few very strong seasons with classic episodes and gags. People remember a lot of them because there are moments in life where you have shit luck or you know THAT person and Seinfeld captured a lot of those slice-of-life bits, while throwing in zany characters and dumb decisions.

Yeah because you've never talked with people before, or nagged someone, or had a discussion. Those are normal, daily occurrences for people all around the world.

Seinfeld if quite literally the OG formula that a lot of sitcoms are following to this very day.

>>
>>697907705
I literally watch at least one episode of Seinfeld every night before bed

It's got to be the best sitcom of all time

The thing that makes it so great is that the humor is absolutely timeless

Only 2 things show the age of the show:

1.Fashion
2.Cell phones (although I think some pretty dated cells are in some episodes)

I am honestly still surprised every time the show actually makes me laugh out loud
>>
My fav thing to do as a kid was get home after school and an afternoon surf as it starts getting dark and cold.
Rug up in a blanket and eat hot chicken Alfredo with penne and watch Seinfeld.
>>
>>697912614
no it wouldn't
>>
>>697912689
I'd lick her feet and suck her toes. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is still sexy as fuck to this day.
>>
>>697912716
Comfy as fuck
>>
I still like Raymond, too.
>>
>>697912501
Why are you so obsessed with sympathising? You laugh at the absurdity of the situations the characters get in, and you mock them for their stupidity. You don't ALWAYS have to sympathise with a character to like a TV show.

You think I sympathised with Walter White when he ran over two guys in his car?
>>
>>697912777
I fap to veep.
>>
>>697912575
I'm just saying, he did win that one time, at least.
>pic related
His job had to stress him the fuck out 90% of the time, or he wouldn't be in character.

I have the same condition as him, where hot showers make me sweat. I always think of that gag.
>>
>>697912837
Yeah people shit on it but it's a funny as fuck comedy. I've got the box set. Did you hear one of the twins irl killed himself? Sad shit.

>>
>>697912695
funny how many famous people have small bits on that show. especially all the hot women Jerry dates for an episode.
>>
>>697912877
but seinfeld seems to want the public to see them as quirky sympthic charackters.
>>
>>697910600
My favorite quote from jerry seinfeld is something he never said
>>
>>697912906
>hot showers make me swear
Hot showers makes most humans sweat. You sweat all the time. You sweat in a cold swimming pool swimming laps. It's the bodies natural cooling system.
>>

I did. Fuckers more than had it coming
>>

This gets me every single time I watch it. One of the best bits from the whole series
>>
>>697912975

>>
>>697908147
this show tries to be seinfeld so hard but just ends up being everyone loves raymond
>>
>>697912877
actually that was my favorite moment in the show.
But when I saw it, I still thought he was looking out for Jesse. it took me a while to accept that Walt really was turning into a monster.
>>

Yeah, that was sad and fucked up.
I was even sad when frank and then Marie died.

>>
>>697913072
I never said I hated it. On the contrary, I think it's one of the strongest scenes in that show. Especially when he says "Run.". Chills went down my spine.
>>
Its different watching it back to back through fuckin netflix or whatever app things you use, than when you're watching it on cable in the 90's with your family and nobodies on a cell phone. ALOT different. the humor just doesnt keep up now.

Regardless, i NEVER laughed out loud at seinfeld, I had a group of fucking faggot friends, all my age (19-20) (im 21) and they would put seinfeld on when we were smoking weed and shit, and laugh at it extra hard like it was really funny, just cause its seinfeld so they could look like they have good taste. its not that funny.
>>
>>697913009
I swear too. Burns like fuck.
>>
>>697913198
to add to what im saying, like they would laugh out loud at it, and while i do think it was a good shoe, it was funny like that. the simpsons is probably my favourite show and ive never laughed at that. when people say they like seinfeld its the same reason they say they like johnny cash or bob marley, social engineering. it's a "CLASSIC" so everyone has to love it. same shit with the beatles and fucking star wars, which both suck so fucking hard its not even funny
>>
>>697907705
The very very last episode addresses exactly what you just listed op. If you don't find it entertaining or funny then stop watching it, the comedy on the show wasn't everyone's cup of tea even for the 90's.
>>
>>697913152
Yeah they were fantastic actors in their own right. Peter Boyle was the monster in Frankenstein with Gene Wilder many years ago.
>>
>>697913179
Me too. It's just that I did sympathize with him. The ability to go from a weak nobody to total badass, well that was a fantasy that I indulged in. That a middle aged, has-been high school chemistry teacher can have the force of will to mold himself completely into another person who survives while others die... I sympathized with it because I saw him as an anti-hero, not a villain. I didn't think Skyler was the cunt everyone else seemed to think (I sympathized with her, too, when she was suspicious) but for a while I kidded myself into thinking what Walt was doing was "cool" or enviable.
>>
>>697913332

>>697911395
I disagree...he was easily swayed in to fits of emotional extremes, but was the core of all of them, somehow helping them have some moral center of soets until it crashed down on them all. Jerry was just a guy.. way better than the average /btard, ffs.
>>
>>697913453
It was just an example. Obviously a bad one, but an example none the less. I definitely sympathised with him, and Skyler.

Fuck man, I even sympathised with Hank sometimes. He just wanted to fight crime and drug lords. Poor dude..

>>
>>697907705
You nailed the humor and the stories. All the characters are selfish and the show is full of insane coincidences.

It is also my favorite show ever, but I grew up watching it. I find that if people just start watching it now, they're not going to enjoy it nearly as much.

It starts to get a little wacky around season 6 or 7 - whenever Larry David left.

One important thing that they set out to do that almost no other sitcom in the 90's was doing - "No lessons". They didn't want it to be like Full House where there's a redeeming lesson at the end and the audience goes "Aww". Fuck that. People are selfish and terrible and that's what the show is about.

It's brilliant.

>>697914576
I don't really think about it like that. I think the entire show is very, very consistently funny.
>>
Newman, Peterman, Puddy, Frank Costanza and Mr Pitt were some of my favorite characters. The idea of using the Peterman catalogue (which actually exists and is exactly how they describe it) to create that character is amazing. Newman is s perfect parody of an evil genius. Puddy's staring into the vacuum is simple and genius, instant laugh. Frank Costanza is just a perfect character, everything he does makes me laugh. Just looking at his face makes me laugh. Mr Pitt's obsession with finding the perfect pair of white socks... And even the really minor characters are amazing, like Crazy Joe Davola, Jean-Paul Jean-Paul, the gay Puerto-Rican thugs, I could go on all day...
>>
"Horace&Pete" Great Show!

>>
>>697907705
It was billed as a 'show about nothing'. It examines the minutia of everyday life, little tidbits and encounters. Before Seinfield, people didnt really think that sorts thing was interesting enough to make a show about. But now, that kind of humor is part of just about every sitcom
>>

>>
>>697907705
It followed All in the Family and Roseanne as being the only show on the air centered around seriously fucked up characters, the writing went all inception on itself which hadn't really been done well before, and it was reasonably funny.

As for Jewwyness, everyone in show is since the 1940s has "known", only Jews being jewwy are funny. ...because the Studio heads are Jews and find other Jews funny. They choose casting agents who are also Jews, who share their tastes, and cast Jews in comical roles. ...and have negroes cast as mouthy niggers, whites as barbarians on the edge, Indians cast in Apu roles, native murricans portrayed by old Jews in facepaint, etc. It's an attitude that persists to this day. This business talks a big liberal game from the bottom up, but from the top down is run by extremely conservative Jews propping up old stereotypes from minstrel show era.

>>
>>697907705
What made this show really good was the writing. There was always an A, B, and usually a C/D story in each episode. The stories would cross over, or the way one character felt about something because of story A would influence a character in story B. Sometimes they would intertwine. Each episode ended with all 3 stories being resolved. The jokes are 4-7 of 10s like any other sitcom. The writing is why it was a "good" show.

You think Seinfeld is hard to watch, just remember the other best show on the air at the time "Northern Exposure", which was a beautiful show set in a beautiful place with quality writing & characters. But look at comedy shows before seinfeld and after.
Seinfeld changed the game. Sure it employed old sitcom tactics, canned laughter, studio audience, sets, but the style of comedy completely changed the game. It was fresh in the 90s. It was a show about a group of friends instead of a show about a family or other such nonsense.
Now look at today how many shows draw their influence from seinfeld? Fucking all of them.
