Could time travel be possible? If so, how?
>>
>>696773670
The question is, how isn't it possible?
Gravitational forces from black holes have already been found to bend time-space, there's no telling what we can use that for in the future.
>>
>>696773670
traveling to the future is possible but idk about the past
>>
>>696773911
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_time_dilation
We can probably go forward in time, but being next to a black hole wouldn't be the most comfortable thing.
And we can't really go back in time unless we manage to reverse gravity.
>>
Sorry, no. I don't remember who said it but you can't put your foot in the same stream twice. The stream may be the same but the original water has moved away.

If time travel was real, shouldn't there have someone from the future travel to the present already?
>>
>>696773670
The entropy in the sim is bidirectional. Even if you could reverse the direction of all of the matter in the universe, the entropy would still behave in the same way. You'd really just spin off a new future.
>>
>>696775329
Why would anybody from the future come here? They're probably all in Rome for the orgies and gladiator games.
>>
>>696775722
Or maybe there were no orgies or gladiators until some folks from the future went back and made Rome their playground.
>>
>>696773670
time travel is impossible. there is no past or future, only the present. in order for time to go forward or backwards you'd need 1 a parallel universe or 2 all current matter in the universe to revert back to a previous state.
>>
>>696775329
maybe they can't go back to an era where the time machine hasn't been invented yet

this is a stupid theory. bending time space is essentially altering its present form. you'd have to completely change the matter existing in that bend to a previous state. it would have to take an entirely different parallel universe, as i said before, with all current matter existing in that universe and that universe would have to create and sustain life in a past form and recreate the events that happened in said past form. it's just not possible.
>>
We can't, cause we haven't went into a back hole and back.

Btw, every time think beforehand that, if, we could, the future would had said so by coming here. We would know, right?

The Earth moves at a massive speed, around a Sun that moves at a greater speed, as part of a galaxy moving at incredible speeds.

If you could step out of the constraints of space time to re-enter it even a second later, you'd likely be in the vacuum of space. It'd be a rough ride.

If you managed to come relatively close to travelling near the speed of light you could effectively return to earth after your journey having aged very little compared to those that remained on the planet... You'd still need to remain on your spacecraft for a number of years though yourself, so it's not exactly a practical time machine

When it comes to time travel, there's no way of knowing, until we actually achieve it.

There's also the paradox of if time travel is possible at some point in the future, why haven't we travelled back to our present?
>>
>>696773670
Due to Einstein's law of relativity, moving forward in time is possible. As you travel at speeds near the speed of light, time for you is experienced slower than others. It can be seen when to put two clocks at the same time, send one around the world on a plane, and they would be different times. Moving fast enough, you will travel in time faster then time on Earth. Travelling into the past is impossible. It would require infinite energy to travel faster than light. Law of conservation of mass and energy applies so that traveling back in time, there would be two of each particle in your body, and thus increasing the mass in the universe, and removing mass in present day.

tl;dr

Travel forward in time? YES
Travel backward in time? NO

Dude, we're all time travelling right now.
It's forward, of course, but still- TIME TRAVEL!
>>
>>696778620
Yes it does, Einstein.

If you were to travel at the speed of light, what feels like a minute for you would be much longer for the people back on Earth, so if you returned after traveling at that speed time would have passed, and you would have traveled into the future.

Relativity 101 lad.

Why does everyone here have a hard time understanding the word "theory?"

Were you home schooled with books from the Flat Earth Society?

"Theory" in a scientific context means working model. It doesn't mean "guess." A lot of theories have been disproven, but that doesn't mean they can't still be used - you can still predict the positions of the planets (sans Mercury) using Copernicus' methods. People still build bridges and structures using classical mechanics.

There's no point in saying that something is "just a theory." What else would it be? And before you say "law," laws aren't "proven theories," they're just specific statements from a theory.

tl;dr learn 2 science, bitch
>>
>>696780303
Then you should stop explaining it to them. It is not time travel. Time is moving slower for the fast moving body. Saying it is time travel is fucking stupid.
>>

if we could travel at light speed, and orbit the earth for 10 years, when you come back down 100 years will have passed on earth.
>>
>>696780586
That's why it's time travel.
It's allowing someone to shift time far into the future for what is only a moment for them.
Thus time travel into the future.

Did you complete grade school? You seem to lack basic reasoning and understanding.
>>
>>696780014
A quantum computer already exists. Think it's called D-Wave or something. The plateau/slowdown just isn't going to happen.

As soon as we have decent AI (which will happen pretty soon) there'll be no stopping advancements.
>>
>>696780497
ahh, someone slightly enlightened, exactly, lack of movement or action would mean it would be an "instance" in time, thus there would be nothing happening.
>>
>>696779574
Time doesn't "slow down." Time feels normal for you, and everyone else. But, you observing someone observing time passing is completely different for them. Ex. You are on a spacecraft orbiting LEO (Low Earth Orbit), traveling very quickly compared to the ground of Earth. You travel for one year. On the ground, it has been longer on Earth for the people there than a year.

What I am describing in time dilation. Before telling me stop teaching things, make sure what I teach is false before calling me out.
>>

The definition of time travel:
the action of traveling through time into the past or the future.

You can't go to the past. Those events have already come to pass and for you to relive them you'd have to CHANGE all matter around you as i said before. Which isn't possible. Or you'd have to enter a parallel universe which doesn't exist.
>>
>>696780855

If you could travel at light speed, time for you would stop. Eternity would pass you by while you experienced no time at all.

Of course, you'd also have infinite mass, which is why matter can't move at the speed of light.

Time is relative to the observer and factors such as acceleration and gravity.
Say if you were to orbit a black hole and someone was observing from farther away. If it took you an hour to orbit the black hole under an incredibly strong gravitational influence, it could take years from the observer's position under little to no gravity.
Time is relative because gravity warps spacetime.

The next step for general purpose computing is massive parallelism and a shift to optical processing. Don't expect optical processors for a long time, though.

I'm a subscriber to string theory, which supports a time traveling to a previous time period a possibility, but not in the way you think.

If by chance you manage to generate enough energy and this into (Unspecified) power over X period of time to manipulate space-time. If you move your psychical body across this sea, you can only travel to the past/future of a different universe that is adjacent to the one you left among the infinite amount of universes present. You wouldn't be traveling into your own universe's timeline but a completely different one that you likely will have absolutely no investment in.

If any of this were true, you could do a double hop method in theory to travel into a different universe past, then travel back into the one you left but at an earlier time period.
But how would you even target a particular adjacent universe, its not like Universes' have serial codes or phone numbers you can dial, and how would you generate this energy in a different universe to make multiple trips cross the sea? For all we know the energy required would be compressing large stars by using a big star eating machine.

IMO i think time travel is possible, but as a one way trip into a place with no historical relevance to you or anyone. If by chance a person from the future is here, he is from a time and place likely much different from the history he knows. Making it a gigantic waste of time, resources, and kills hopes and dreams.

The clock didn't get sped up, do you even know how atomic clocks work?

We can measure atomic decay accurately. If you had uranium on a satellite for 10 years, when brought back to earth and measured, the rate if decay will be less than it should be for the amount of time passed in earth, so from the perspective of people on earth, that uranium is in a past state of matter relative to them because time is not constant.

So what I got from this thread is that time travel isn't actually possible.
Even if we sent a man in space, speeding around at the speed of light, the time for everyone else would pass as normally, while he zips around in space for a vast amount of time.
