my favorite book is 8 steps to happiness by geshe kelsang gyatso.

pretty good book, don't be fooled by the cheesy title
>>

I didn't take my books to my new flat, they're still at my parent's, so no picture, sorry.

Rabensturm - Bernhard Hennen (sadly there's no english translation, as far as I know)

The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemmingway

Before I Go To Sleep - S. J. Watson (weak middle section, but everything else was great)

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared - Jonas Jonasson
(The title is just as ridiculous as the book. Almost read it in one sitting. Bought it at a train station, because I had a four hour ride before me. After arrival I stayed at a cafe near the train station and kept on reading until I was almost at the end. Highly recommend, though it fits quite a specific niche, I guess.)

Also this >>695925559 one. Probably the one book everyone should know.

I kept an open mind about it when I first read it, I liked the ideas it came up with, how the characters were written and I really felt sorry for the main character when there was that scene when he saw himself in the mirror for the first time after his torture.

But I can see your points on it too, it wasn't the best thing I've ever read but I still really liked it

Not so. The original publication had 21 chapters, the movie and American edition of the book covered 20 chapters.

If you like it, it's the first entry in a trilogy. They are all good, but Horses is the best.

If you're into Westerns but like them to be more in the direction of Cormac McCarthy than Louis L'amour, the Lonesome Dove saga by Larry McMurtry is a very satisfying set of four books.

I loved that book when I was a kid but I now realize it basically conditions you to expect the worse. You see the current fucked up statement we live in as good because it's not as bad as those dystopias(1984, brave new work, Fahrenheit 451, etc)

Stephen King writes suspense. He's earned millions of dollars writing suspense. He does it well. That does not make his books more than the literary equivalent of a popcorn movie.
Alan Moore can write conscientiously, about politics, existentialism, genre deconstruction, etc. What argument do you have against that other than your preconceieved notion that comics are dumb?

At what point in me talking about how his writing is garbage did you decide to stop listening and pray to your poster of Rorschach for strength? Watchmen is shit. The characters arent relatable in anyway, unless you are an edgy fuccboi. The superhero aspect was a carbpn copy AT BEST. At worst its just trivial takes on war and politics. The comedian is just al moores attempt at showing he can write a dramatic sad clown, but it falls flat.

Lets not get into why his takes on sexual relationships is fucked.

But yea, stephen king, who can expertly write pretty much any genre, is a shitty choice compared to alan fucking moore.

I'd hope so. I'm not exactly loving the way US authors write. I feel like they write only to convey information and the art that is writing isn't something they perceive to be important.
That's especially true for (in)famous Stephen King and I realize that he isn't exactly a good example, but it's something I've noticed as a commonality among US writers. Then again I haven't read a lot of US originals, maybe two dozen. I'll take your word for it and will order Chandler's first novel.

In the history of human media there is and has always been a period of time directly following the introduction of a new medium during which that medium is regarded as not being true art. Eventually museums, high culture, the academy, etc are faced with a piece of work so endearingly classic that they are forced to recognize the legitimacy of said medium/genre.This is easily observable in the histories of photography, film, performance art, music , etc

Someone shouldn't read philosophy because they were told to read book a, then book b etc. They should read what interests them, else they will not digest it. eh. i read those when i was young. i read all he had written up to my early 20s. i liked him then.
then i kind of... outgrew him. i guess.
recently i tried to go back and reread some of his stuff and was shocked how awful it was.
clunky, hack writing, rampant misanthropy, every character with the same internal monologue of baby
boomer hipster beebop...
i couldn't stop cringing at how bad it was.

If you think that is god tier you must of read 10-20 books in your entire life
Currently reading fear and loathing on the campaign trail 72. Enjoying it I can see why Thompson is hailed as an incredible writer
First real book I even read that wasn't a teenage novel like skullduggery pleasent thatyou read when you are 12 was junky by Burroughs, got a copy from my sisters room, since then been reading the Beats. I enjoy the laid back but cutting writing style.
Junky will always be god tier in my eyes even though it's not his best work
Fear and loathing in las vegas is god tier
On the road is god tier
One flew over the cuckoos nest is god tier
1984 is close as is animal farm
I read a novel on the gulags in Russia something archipelago was a while since I read it but that was one of the best works of historical writing I've read so that's god tier historical
Frankie Boyles first autobiography was hilarious and quite chilling at times that was a god tier autobiography
So you've been publicly shamed by Jon Ronson was a great look into modern day life and how the internet and other forms of media work
I could go on

I hated "It". "The Stand" was okay.
By far his best work, by my taste, is "The Dark Tower 7: The Dark Tower" and it's not outstanding by any capacity. Maybe I only like it because of the images I've created in my head. It's a nice place of dark beauty that I like to think back to.

It's not that anyone "outgrew the Beatles" it's just that when you ask a grown ass man about what some old music is, he should have something more interesting to suggest then "the Beatles" and that most of us aren't trying to listen to fuckin love me do after the age of 13.....
