After arrival I stayed at a cafe near the train station and kept on reading until I was almost at the end. Highly recommend, though it fits quite a specific niche, I guess.)

I'd hope so. I'm not exactly loving the way US authors write. I feel like they write only to convey information and the art that is writing isn't something they perceive to be important.
That's especially true for (in)famous Stephen King and I realize that he isn't exactly a good example, but it's something I've noticed as a commonality among US writers. Then again I haven't read a lot of US originals, maybe two dozen. I'll take your word for it and will order Chandler's first novel.

As for Plato, most philosophers since him make heavy reference to his works, meaning it is almost a must for reading works of Nietzsche, Kant, and many other enlightenment era philosophers.
