The US government has been working on it for years. Slowly killing off and imprisoning the lesser races (blacks/mexicans) while simultaneously dividing public opinion into defined factions in order to set up our country for a 2nd civil war, in which the whites(mainly conservative republicans) will gain back control. Look how quickly the population has grown in just the last 20 years. As our population grows, so will the rate at which we reproduce. Life is fairly easy and safe for the majority of people and it makes for ripe conditions to make a family.
But another 50-100 years down the line, who knows what mess we'll be in. It might not have an impact on us, but if you care for your children, or your friends children, or just the human race in general, you'll realise that simply sitting back and claiming there is no problem is silly.

This is exactly part of the problem though, as I explained. By creating a safe and secure world to live in, you create the perfect conditions for raising a family. In doing this, you only speed up the growth of the population. All this does is reduce the time we have before things start getting out of control.
We're already getting through quite a lot of resources as we are now. A large population puts more strain on those resources. When you get to this point, things like natural disasters are now 100x more of a problem, because it could potentially wipe out entire crops that support a large chunk of your population.

This is why there will be a problem. All treaty members will want something from it. Allowing a single company to own this would not only anger the rest of the members, but they'd probably vote to stop any sort of mining operation before they launched the first ships.

The problem is, a lot of the questions I'm being asked are ones I cannot give you an accurate answer to. Again, as I've said, this is probably going to happen 60+ years in the future. The world could be different, governments may have more power, they might just outright ban products that use X mineral.
I honestly don't know, but the fact remains it's still a possibility. This goes back to the human greed element, hopefully by the time we are mining asteroids and bringing resources back to Earth, we would have figured out some way that all treaty members can benefit from the resources that a company/country brings back. And thus, avoid any sort of trade restriction in the first place.
But the fact remains, as it stands right now. I cannot drill an asteroid, bring that rock back and then profit from it. Until we figure out how we're going to transport and distribute what we get, it's all speculation.

Most of the ownership issues address by the original treaty were national ownership.
No country can claim land in space but companies are a bit different.
There was a thing where after the treaty one dude claimed ownership of all bodies in the solar system and began selling pieces to other people but most countries don't respect that authority.
I think the way that it works out is that a company can own things but not land, so the station and mining equipment can be owned but the land can't. That puts the mined resources in a bit of grey area but as long as you put them inside something clearly owned by the company I don't see the problem.

When you start cramming too many people into the same place, unless some mechanism exists to thin out the numbers, it'll reach catastrophic levels.
