That's just the common name of a mod which let's you select all three pickups together, which sounds pretty tiny and weak, or the neck and bridge pickup together, which is a great sound similar to a tele or jaguar middle position.

I get a similar problem with the pickle when used with the explorers EMG 81/85. Rolling the tone knob all the way down, or rolling off the volume seems to fix it a little.

I use the combo 2x12" version when playing with my band. Don't feel like taking my precious tube amp everywhere when practicing. Only use my tube for shows or when we practice the entire weekend.
