When conflict happens on the scale it did, expecting peace is like expecting the sun to not rise the next day because of a nasty sun burn. It's just not going to happen because that is the nature of things. When people get into conflict like that, they are aware that it is life or death in some situations. If they stop, and get bombarded, angry crowds will pop the seal on the tank, and throw the guy into the streets and who knows what would happen to them.
