I know about the recording process (took just four hours of studio time to record the entire album, so I hear), about French supposedly being tossed down a set of stairs for being unable to "play a strawberry" on the drums, and about Vliet's obsessive creativity.
There's just so much going on in any given track; every instrument is kind of playing its own song, and each interacts with the other in an amazing way. You have to listen carefully many times to catch all of it, which is why I called it subtle.
Have you listened to any of Beefhearts other albums? None are quite like TMR, but there are some gems in there.
