I'm from Michigan, so basically I grew up with the choices of hockey and football to care about. Since the late 90s/early 2000s were the golden age of the Red Wings and the Lions have literally always sucked, my whole generation are rabid hockey fans. Plus, we had roller or ice rinks all over, since it's Michigan. For a while I played on a kids' league, but I was never any good really. I just enjoy it.

Makes perfect sense. In Michigan most people are kind of proud of being broke (since basically everyone is broke) and somehow soccer became the "rich kid" sport, so it's sort of a running joke that kids who can afford to be in soccer leagues are entitled little faggots. It's not any more expensive than any other kids' sport, so I have no idea how that came to be, but for some reason only rich kids play league soccer up there. Same with baseball too, though to a lesser extent. I think part of it could be that there's really only like 3 months of good soccer/baseball weather, while basketball/football/hockey are played year round in any weather (hockey just goes indoors or on roller blades in the summer).
Right now I'm in Texas and soccer is way more common than it ever was back home, so I'm guessing my experiences with it are purely regional. I know hockey is basically nonexistent here, so that's regional for sure.
