eh, how americans view WW2 isnt that bad when you consider how bad they seem to misremember WW1. WW2 was won in a big part thanks to them, WW1 was literally them showing up at the last minute, accomplishing very little, and taking all the credit.

All it takes is one obscene display of power and lack of empathy to pave the path to an empire built on fear.
Your complaining about bombing civilians and your tired old 'muh ___' jab at one of the world's leading superpowers just makes you look like a liberal SJW. Either cite your reasons with factual and reasonable evidence or don't pick a side at all.

Some people argue that it was actually the Soviets declaration of war on Japan that prompted Japan to surrender. Seriously look up how much damage Japan took in US bombings not including the Atom bombs. They didn't give two shits about getting bombed. they did care about ending up in a Soviet Gulag though.

TO THE JAPANESE PEOPLE:
America asks that you take immediate heed of what we say on this leaflet.

We are in possession of the most destructive explosive ever devised by man. A single one of our newly developed atomic bombs is actually the equivalent in explosive power to what 2000 of our giant B-29s can carry on a single mission. This awful fact is one for you to ponder and we solemnly assure you it is grimly accurate.

We have just begun to use this weapon against your homeland. If you still have any doubt, make inquiry as to what happened to Hiroshima when just one atomic bomb fell on that city.

Before using this bomb to destroy every resource of the military by which they are prolonging this useless war, we ask that you now petition the Emperor to end the war. Our president has outlined for you the thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender. We urge that you accept these consequences and begin the work of building a new, better and peace-loving Japan.

You should take steps now to cease military resistance. Otherwise, we shall resolutely employ this bomb and all our other superior weapons to promptly and forcefully end the war.

EVACUATE YOUR CITIES.

>>693226796
ATTENTION JAPANESE PEOPLE. EVACUATE YOUR CITIES.
Because your military leaders have rejected the thirteen part surrender declaration, two momentous events have occurred in the last few days.

The Soviet Union, because of this rejection on the part of the military has notified your Ambassador Sato that it has declared war on your nation. Thus, all powerful countries of the world are now at war with you.

Also, because of your leaders' refusal to accept the surrender declaration that would enable Japan to honorably end this useless war, we have employed our atomic bomb.

A single one of our newly developed atomic bombs is actually the equivalent in explosive power to what 2000 of our giant B-29s could have carried on a single mission. Radio Tokyo has told you that with the first use of this weapon of total destruction, Hiroshima was virtually destroyed.

Before we use this bomb again and again to destroy every resource of the military by which they are prolonging this useless war, petition the emperor now to end the war. Our president has outlined for you the thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender. We urge that you accept these consequences and begin the work of building a new, better, and peace-loving Japan.

Act at once or we shall resolutely employ this bomb and all our other superior weapons to promptly and forcefully end the war.

EVACUATE YOUR CITIES.

"On March 10, 1945, U.S. B-29 bombers flew over Tokyo in the dead of night, dumping massive payloads of cluster bombs equipped with a then-recent invention: napalm. A fifth of Tokyo was left a vast smoldering expanse of charred bodies and rubble.

Today, a modest floral monument in a downtown park honors the spirits of the 105,400 confirmed dead, many interred in common graves."

That's just one of the other bombing runs done months before any atomic weapons being used. I'm not saying atomic weapons didn't have an impact, but it just seems like Japan could care less about being bombed into the stone age.

God, this reminds me of a story my friend's neighbor told me.
His family fled Poland for Hungary when the Soviets came, he was very young. Then when the Soviets invaded Hungary, they took the men back with them as conscripts. His father and two uncles were marched off at gunpoint. He didn't mention them after that.
The day my friend bought his Mosin Nagant, his neighbor came over after we boiled the cosmoline out of it.
The look in his eyes as he held what could have been the rifle that herded his father off to his death was one of pure pain, yet he felt oddly whole, as if he finally had control over the memory.
He was much more approving of my Polish M44, and said he would trust it over the Russian one any day.

What people don't get about the atom bombs and attacking civs in Japan is we firebombed the shit out of them before that.

"From January 1944 until August 1945, the U.S. dropped 157,000 tons of bombs on Japanese cities, according to the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. It estimated that 333,000 people were killed, including the 80,000 killed in the Aug. 6 Hiroshima atomic bomb attack and 40,000 in Nagasaki three days later. Other estimates are significantly higher. Fifteen million of the 72 million Japanese were left homeless."

I love it.

I dont think the Nazi's were the greatest people in history. They did some shitty things. However, I do admire them for being prideful of their culture and their race. Something that Europe is so fucking ashamed about these days. ANY hint of nationalism is quashed.

In America, we have lots of Nationalism but we are not allowed to be proud of being white. I'm not talking about the "My race is better than you" pride, I'm saying we can't even say we exist.

Both cities were warned to evacuate before the bombs were dropped. Not dropping the bombs would have prolonged the war far year, and would have required an invasion and complete take over of the island. The Japanese were arming their people and made them aware that it would be fight to the very last man woman and child. In reality, those bombs saved Japan from total annihilation.

OBJECTIVLY WRONG
>>
>>693234515

Ah yes, I'm sure what was clearly enemy propaganda was supposed to be taken seriously, right?

We as a people are so completely and utterly incapable of imagining a world before the atomic bomb that's it's useless to try. It's the single most significant point in human history.
>>
>the USA and Britain teamed up with the commies
>brought killing civilian tactics to a new level
>plant the germans as the evil ones
>>
>>693235043

I don't disagree at all. I'm just saying that proper warning was given. Whether or not it was taken seriously is of no fault of the US. But you're right. Humanity was given the capability to completely eradicate itself. Scary to think about, and people don't realize how close it has come to happening. More than once.
>>
>>693235712

And I'm simply disagreeing with the "proper warning" qualifier; no one had any reason to believe such threats were serious or capable. Absolving the US of responsibility for that bombing in any capacity (especially when the reasons they chose Hiroshima were more scientific than anything else) is not very honest in my view.
>>

>>
>>693234515
>those bombs saved Japan from total annihilation
Maybe your country needs saving, too?
>>
>>693236507

There's no question of the US's responsibility for the bombing. I'm saying it's not the fault of the US that the Japanese government decided not to take it seriously and evacuate the city.

Sure it is, because the US then dropped an atomic bomb on another country. Literally the worst thing one country has ever done to another occurred after that warning. It is an inconceivable act of pure atrocity; if anyone's not to blame, it's the Japanese government.

That is unless, all possible powers in existence forbidding it, that happens again.

The kind of rationalization anyone uses to justify the "End to the War" argument of detonating atomic bombs over Japan requires massive amounts of assumption and no shortage of amoral thinking that the world after the atomic bomb is preferable to one that had the Japanese fighting MAYBE a little while longer.

Not sure why you linked that post like it's gospel fact.

It's good that it happened when it did. When nuclear technology was primitive and in its baby steps, rather when the world super powers had perfected their nuclear arsenals, it gave the world a chance to see the damage that it could cause with out actually being at its worst potential. And that right there stood the test of the tensions in the Cold War.

The idea behind Black History Month is that black contribution to American history is systemically marginalized (not agreeing with this, just answering the anon's question) so by promoting a devotion to only or primarily black history during the month (February) there is at least a guarantee some time is dedicated to said contributions.

Because Millions of soldiers on both sides and millions of Japanese civilians would have perished. I think it's pretty justifiable. The estimated casualty count was one of the main deciding factors of whether or not to drop the bombs. You're acting like the US just dropped two atomic bombs all nilly willy. Months of planning and debating took place before the operation was even considered.
>>
>>693239228
Nukes were going to be a thing regardless of a bomb being dropped or not. The U.S. using them or not using them would have made no difference. If anything the lasting impact of the million or so men we would have to have thrown into the grinder to take the Home Islands as well as the millions of Japanese soldiers/civilians killed to actually end the war.

You are clearly incredibly illogical and an insane romantic.

Detonation of atomic and nuclear devices on actual human beings was hardly necessary for the philosophy of mutually assured destruction to still take root during the Cold War. What you're implying is that theoretical calculation and actual atomic tests would not have been enough for this? That is a debatable point, but one I believe you are on the far weaker side for.
>>

Nuclear technology was inevitable, I agree - detonating atomic or nuclear technology on human beings was not.

There are written documents from the Japanese government that they were going to fight to last man, woman, and child. I will grant you that at some point the populace would capitulate, however I think you are severely underestimating the amount of life that would have cost.

By the time of surrender, the Japanese had 916,828 military personnel either in position or in various stages of deployment on Kyushu alone.[61] The total strength of the Japanese military in the Home Islands amounted to 4,335,500, of whom 2,372,700 were in the Army and 1,962,800 in the Navy

While the US had promised never to initiate gas warfare, Japan had used gas against the Chinese earlier in the war.[63]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Downfall
>>
>>693240119

History has shown this was incorrect - the bombings were actually rushed due to Russia agreeing to join the US in the war against Japan; America wanted a stronger political position post-conflict before Russia had a larger contribution in the pacific theater and so rushed to end the war as quickly as possible.

In April 1945, the Joint Chiefs of Staff formally adopted a planning paper giving a range of possible casualties based on experience in both Europe and the Pacific. Given a troop list of 766,700 men and a 90-day campaign, the US Sixth Army could be expected to suffer between 514,072 casualties (including 134,556 dead and missing) under the "Pacific Experience" (1.95 dead and missing and 7.45 total casualties/1,000 men/day) and 149,046 casualties (including 28,981 dead and missing) under the "European Experience" (0.42 dead and missing and 2.16 total casualties/1,000 men/day).[78] This assessment included neither casualties suffered after the 90-day mark (US planners envisioned switching to the tactical defensive by D+120[79]), nor personnel losses at sea from Japanese air attacks.[80] In order to sustain the campaign on Kyushu, planners estimated a replacement stream of 100,000 men per month

The reason was the oil embargo. For most of the 30's Japan was importing most of its oil from the US and UK (the US was a net exporter of oil back then, and the UK controlled a ton of oil fields in its colonies in the Middle East). But the US and UK agreed to cut off Japan's oil supply with an embargo after Japan invaded China in 1937. Japan obviously needed oil to run its military and sustain it's war with China, so their only choices were to either attack the United States and then capture the oil fields in Southeast Asia by force (which were controlled by various European colonies) or admit defeat and withdraw their forces from China. Obviously they didn't want to admit defeat to China, so they had to attack the United States.
>>
>>693241119
So are reasons to have NOT used them if that's your argument.
>>
>>693240771

Actually, a much more highly contested debate was that Japan was preparing to surrender prior to the bombings anyway - it's certainly not established fact either way, a little dishonest to represent it that way.

The U.S. embargoing Japanese slaughter of Chinese civilians seems like reasonable reaction. So, again, the Japanese brought it upon themselves.

We deprived them of basic resources necessary for a growing nation that otherwise had no access to them, like oil and steel which was needed not only for their rapid population growth but their war with china. So yeah it obviously wasn't warranted but their intention was to catch the United States off guard because every competent Japanese military leader knew Japan lacked the industrial capacity to survive a long war with the United States. they wanted this to coincide with their seizure of pacific colonial territories and military bases and have a Pacific empire of sorts when the United States did get it's industrial engine going.

Howeever, Japan has in no way forgotten and put it behind them.

They're not going to lose their minds, break ranks, and launch an attack on the US out of nowhere, but when the shit hits the fan, and it's time for everyone to stab ceasar, Japan is going to be near the front of the line with all the technological retaliation they can bring.

They actually did do that. Occassionally someone finds one. The biological payload was not a threat. The actual danger came from the dispersal detonator going off when some kid stumbles on it and tries monkeying with it.

They had no capabilities for an attack on the mainland US. It was already known by then.

The USSR having any say in the pacific theatre would have caused even more tension in the Cold War than there already was, imagine splitting up Japan the way Germany had been. Yeah that would've been fun. Regardless, the bombs ended the war immediately, no further conflict was necessary against Japan. The nations will to fight had crumbled, without annihilating the population. Russia has been kept out of the pacific theatre, and the United States as well as all soon to be (and a little longer to be) nuclear powers witnessed the devistating effect of atomic weapons on real, living, feeling humans. That impact in itself showed that the atomic bombs should never be used again.

Reason we dropped the bombs on Japan, when we did, was threefold:

What your speculation does not support, however, is that the detonation of these bombs were necessary for the mutual destruction philosophy of the Cold War - I contend it was not, that the affects of atomic and nuclear weaponry would have been well known to both superpowers without Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You can continue to argue it was necessary, but there's just no good reasoning to support that position.

you sir, are retarded.
>Harbor
>Harbour

same word, different spelling. It's supposed to be used with respect to the subject at hand. I wouldn't give a fuck if you said colour because it's an objective concept. However, something NAMED in a country that uses a specific dialect holds the spelling.

Example: Americans don't go around spelling 'Luxembourg' as 'Luxemborg' or 'Luxenburg' because we understand the geographical significance of the spelling.
>>
>>693248503
Sorry, I'm drunk tonight. I mean't 'Luxemburg' at the second quotation

I remember having to learn Russian in the 7th grade because our entire area was all recently settled by germans post-war, we they wanted us to be able to communicate with russian soldiers effectively should they invade. It was a very real concern at that time. I sort of miss a formidable Russia. One superpower with absolute power running amok in the world unopposed hasn't been good for the world or for the US, corrupting itself absolutely to new heights daily.

This is so fucking stupid, OP. There were no dinosaurs in WWII

>I'm drunk

Well that explains why you sound so retarded. You took some mad bait straight to your ugly face.
>>
>>693248623

"I'm drunk" is the most often repeated cringy lie on the internet for when anyone makes a mistake.

It was never rumored to surrender. The Emperor made it well known to everyone including the US that it would be a fight to the finish. This weapon allowed the Japanese people to wake up a realize the amount of devistation they were facing. Before it was about honor and protecting their culture and homeland. After the bombs fell, it was the slap back into reality showing that if the war continues, all of Japan will burn. They had already lost, but we're so caught up with their "death before dishonor" philosophy, that they didn't see doom staring their entire country in the face.
>>
>>693248669
Not since the bronze age when "sacking" civilizations was a thing.
>>
>>693248843
The Emperor was originally anti war with the United States but got strong armed by his militarist government. As were a lot of leading Japanese commanders. The death before dishonor thing was overshadowed by logic plenty of times if you actually read into it.

You're all such humanitarians right...

Prove it.
All the dino bones I've ever seen in my lifetime were in the ground. For all we know they could have died fighting in the war as OP's photo clearly shows. I suppose youre going to tell me you've seen dinos existing somewhere.
>>
>>693248843

This is simply not true - not from historical study, nor from a logical point of view. If the Hirohito and/or the Japanese people were truly resolved in "fighting to the last man", the atomic bombs wouldn't have changed that - that fact that they did surrender completely contradicts your speculation. That said, it has been hotly debated, but yes, it is an ongoing debate that Japan was close to a surrender before Hiroshima.

I only get on here when I'm drunk nowadays and it's usually about this time because my kid is sleeping

>>693248814
There isn't anything cringe worthy about drinking. And I've been making them all night because I actually am drunk. On my 3rd glass of bourbon. The only reason I made my correction is because I accidentally typed 'harbot' earlier instead of 'harbor'
>>
>>693249349

What the fuck are you doing, anon? It's all about KDR you fucking noob, who cares that the US supplied everyone, Russia especially, the transportation and resources needed to fight the war?

Is your kids name Harbot?
>>
>>693249122

Yeah and even when the Emperor DID call for surrender, there were plans of a coup to over throw him and continue the war.
>the death before dishonor thing was overshadowed by logic plenty of times

Same goes for the opposite.
>>
>>693248900
I'm sorry, hold on a sec... Are you suggesting, seriously, that war is somehow an ordered exercise where everything goes to plan and innocents are (or can be) kept out of the line of fire, and no one used scorched earth policy or sacking and rapine slaughter since the Bronze Age? Not intentionally strawmanning you if that's not what you mean; just calling for clarification.
>>
>>693249197

I'm calling false flag on your bait.
>>
>>693249649
nope
>>
>>693249274

It's like you don't read all of the post. Or you're too stupid to comprehend how a weapon that is unimaginably powerful and has never been seen before could shake a populous into favoring a call for surrender.
>>
>>693249274
They'd already agreed to the terms for surrender once. Then the US said fuck thaose terms, here, enjoy these nukes, now we have new terms for you to agree to.

That was 2 totally unecessary indescriminate attacks on densely populated civilian targets, with weapons well-tested designed specifically to maximize casualties.

No bullshit, Japan owes us a couple nuked cities for that, I'll give em that.

Ok, we'll give ya the furst two cities as freebies, Japan. But then we're even, and you hit us after that and it's on again.
>>
>>693250079

>Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind
>>
>>693249716

No, I don't think it does - with all the rampant speculation you've been doing, suddenly a coup that overthrows the Emperor of Japan leads to a smooth transition that continues a war against the US and Russia like nothing happened? And the highly regimented Japanese military and people just accept it?
>>
>>693249798
I wish it were bait and yes every time murica went to war it was because of a false flag operation
>>
>>693250064

> I don't like that you pointed out a logical contradiction in my speculation, you're stupid.

How pathetic, anon.
>>
>>693249758
Is that what I said? No, I didn't, I said indescriminate mass murder of non-combatants and razing their civilization to rubble hasn't geen how warfare has worked since "sacking" was an accepted practice, which was all the way back in the bronze age.

If I'd meant that other vague/generalization/straw man bullshit you just siad, I'd have written that instead.
