Streaming and TV are killing Hollywood. It costs so much for commercial time and production the only movies worth doing are reboots remakes and sequels because they're guarentees money. No one wants to take a chance on original ideas. Netflix and others can take chances because they don't have to advertise and they can distribute themselves. Just throw it in the queue. TV can provide a better platform for drama suspense anticipation etc. Plus pretty much everyone has a nice TV now so no point in going out except the occasional blockbuster. Ghost Busters is a masterpiece of psychological masochism. When I first saw the film I was desperately overwhelmed with an urge to shamefully masturbate, the patrons beside me were visibly bothered and did not fully return their attention to the movie while my breath restricted as I rubbed through the pants with my soda. It's because we are tired of reheated leftovers... Hollywood has overdone it trying to appeal to childhood nostalgia. The original Ghsostbusters worked because a) it was fucking fun and b) it actually had a good plot comedy aside. There was a plausible premise (working on the supernatural exists) that ended up with a group of ill equipped misfits doing this epic good vs evil battle. And you were rooting for an everyman like Bill Murray to get it on with Sigourney Weaver. That was it, TBH Ibarely remember anything about the sequel (which probably was the reason it did not become a blockbuster franchise) and the cartoons were just tripe, if anyone watched them it was because in the pre-internet times you were pretty much stuck with whatever the tv spoon fed you. Many things about the concept are now dated (people running around with non government issued nuclear powered weapons in fucking NYC) but let's say you can make the concept work, I've got nothing against them being women except 1) feels like an agenda 2) it's not immediately relatable for those of us who would actually feel nostalgic about the original 3) tough act to follow when the original had 2 acknowledged comedic geniuses. Is McCarthy suposed to be Dan Aykroyd? The other girl doesn't quite look like a streetsmart scumbag which Murray's character was in a way... Why go back to the archetypes of the original characters in the first place?
I will watch the movie, I will make a legit atempt to be open minded and not reflexevely cringe if I see something "done wrong", but I don't quite expect I'll enjoy it anywhere near as much as I did the original and not just because I'm an adult. I get it we are a more inclusive society now but this painting over old cultural icons is disastrous. Make new ones, have them earn their place the way the old ones did. Black or female superhero shouldn't just be a reimagining, no matter how clever.
