My point is that to support a blanket ban with "but they are intended to cause harm" is ultimately a futile argument, because one of our most basic tools has as its primary function to cause harm.

Yes, there are lots of different types of guns, but that's basically the only similarity you can draw. A gun does not qualify as a "basic tool". As for the quoted text, I'll elaborate. I'm a chef, and where I live you must have a lock on your knife kit if you plan to commute to your place of work or study.
