He maybe had a chance with the bow, but unilaterally declaring one-on-one combat after the battle, then shooting Jon Snow with an arrow before he even has a weapon in his hand isn't that much more likely to make the Stark men surrender than just shooting him without warning.

I think one of them could destroy a ship with a second of fire breath but you'd have to wait a while for the ship to burn and sink. They could take out a whole fleet pretty quickly if they flew around just setting ships on fire.
