IMO, you could make a lot of money through simply hentai, as there's definitely a strong niche economy based on hentai.
I do art to improve myself and so others can enjoy it, I wouldn't "sell" my art anymore than take donations or take commissions to make something I already wanted to make. I feel like making art just to sell it as one's living is forced.

Hatsune Miku is the mascot for Vocaloid, which is a voice synthesizer program. Miku is the personification of one of the voices, which happens to be 01 (of many).
Music produced by these synthetic voices through the Vocaloid engines would often be put into a video with characters in them to make a music video. These characters would be the mascots for the different voice engines, like Miku, Luka, Rin, Len, Gumi, etc.
Vocaloid community started getting bigger, and of course, r34 followed suit.
