Sup /b/? You have just been convicted of possession and distribution of CP. Or whatever other crime you committed. You have been given a lengthy sentence as a slave gladiator. You are allowed to pick your weapon but it must be a melee weapon. No bows, and certainly no guns. What do you choose?

I think I'd go with a mace.

Poor choice. Swords are really secondary weapons, unless you're talking about Zweihanders/great swords. They also take a lot of skill to use effectively.

Good choice. Easy to use, long reach, some armour-piercing capability, effective against infantry and cavalry. The spear was the main weapon of most soldiers for a majority of history, and for good reason.

It would still be fine one on one - people used polearms in duels all the time. Just look at Hans Talhoffer's manuals - a lot of it concerns the use of polearms in a duel. I'm not sure why you think it would be ineffective.

Mjölrin (i think i misspelled it) aka thor's hammer (ofc with the ability to use it)
>>
>>689215885
>I like maces but they are honestly shit in armored combat

Wrong. Maces was designed specifically to deal with armour - a blade will be deflected by armour and lose a lot of the power of the blow. A mace will send most of the energy of the blow through the armour - that's the reason they only really took off in the 14th/15th century when full plate harness became widespread.

Mjölnir. Unless you're Thor you wouldn't be able to use it - he has the magical jarngreipur ("iron grips") which give him the strength to wield it.
>>
>>689216451
>A mace will send most of the energy of the blow through the armour

not really. they're better at doing so than a bladed weapon, but they're still likely to be deflected by armour.

they're a trade off. less reach, for slightly better chance vs armoured.

>Yeah, really.

No.

Stop getting your reference from video games.

maces (and warhammers) are not some sort of instant "goes through armour" button. They are marginally better. The spiked types in fact pre-date plate, in the form of Kiripichnikov Type IV and Type I, and while they are effective, it is not, in any form, a forgeone conclusion. Maces and hammers are only a little less likely to deflect and glance off armour - which in reality is insanely effective at protecting from edged and blunt weapons alike.
However, as primarily weapons used on horseback, Maces and Warhammers are inherently designed with a shorter reach than most bladed weapons, which makes them a trade-off of range for a slight gain in performance.

Of course, these matches don't allow grappling or the use of non-"bladed" areas, both of which can put the naginata at a significant advantage (unless the naginataka is much smaller/female versus the kendoka, in which case it was smarter to keep distance).

When we experimented a little in fencing with making longer blades in the armory or using a makeshift "spear" against an epee for the hell of it, the basic finding was that
1. You need lots of wrist strength and point control to be effective using the piercing-only long weapon in a duel.
2. If you can't use the body/shaft of the spear, you're done as soon as the point is taken, so the only strategy is to attack (this resembles the strategy for those who always pommel a French grip). Hence the only sensible way to have a "bout" is to allow use of the shaft and to fight in a square, not on a strip.
3. If you can do all this effectively, you can control the bout, at least for the few times we did it. The only real way to test this point would be to train on it for quite a while longer so that the raw intimidation of facing a giant spear with a dinky sword was no longer an issue.

Hope this helps for all you enthusiastfags.

i'm an electrician.
hold on, this will make sense, i swear.
On commercial and industrial sites, we run the wire in metal pipe. When you run from one floor to another, it's easiest to do it inside the walls which are either poured concrete or cinder block (which is usually filled with mortar).

So everywhere you have a riser (usually all four corners or at least one at each stairwell) you will have pipe turned out of the wall above ceiling height for you to couple onto and continue it to wherever the circuit needs to go. These stub-outs are usually only 6-10 inches long and are never, EVER straight.

Until you whack the shit out of them with a three foot crowbar, that is...

Not trying to be a fedora wearer, but I have used a flail before. The entire reason this was a more used weapon by knights is thanks to the whip, aswell as its' ability to reach around limbs/blocks from other weapons and hit people in the side.

The literal only risk with a flail is if your opponent dodges the blow, it will backfire as you said. There's a reason flails were favored against other knights and not against fast-moving, other people, hence the "assuming my opponents will wear some kind of armor".

Ha.
HAHAHAHAAHAHAAAaaaaaah.

oh, you're so fucking wrong.

Have a 15th C falchion. certainly not "pot metal".

Weight? 900g.

Real weapons are light.
They are light, because lighter weapons are faster. and faster weapons hit with more kinetic energy, and more importantly, hit before the other person does.

And frankly, I trust their experience more than your imagination about how weapons work.

They don't even allow strike to the legs, which would have been a primary tactic of a naginata. Samurai leg armor (Sune-Ate) only covered the shins not the feet or back of the calf.

>don't even allow strike to the legs

You don't know what you're talking about. Naginatado has suneate, which can be struck from the shin or side of the calf (the back cannot be hit with sufficient force with the blade to be worth protecting or scoring in competition, but historical armor protects the back of the calf, and now that there is no grappling there is no tripping), and in naganatado-vs-kendo the kendoka wears suneate.

Also I looked it up and in naginatado they train with many shaft techniques illegal in competition, unlike in kendo where we only do kata with old techniques (though I think the only things kendo has banned are leg strikes and munetsuki, the former of which was almost never used or scored and the latter is still allowed defensively but not scored).

I'm not sure whether in naginatado vs kendo the naginatadoka is allowed to use some of the competition-illegal techniques -- it probably depends on who's doing the demonstration and their experience. One should thus assess each youtube video individually.
>>
A spear. It was the staple weapon for a reason. There's a reason swords were sidearms. No one went to war with just a sword.
>>
You're all forgetting that reach or impact power does not help anything if you cant handle the weapon. Ever wielded a Yari (spear)? That thing is surely NOT for stabbing only. Same goes for a top-heavy axe.
Well, I know that katanas break easily, but at least I'm trained in handling it. As soon as it breaks, I'd prefer a knife. Simply because I'm trained with a knife rather than a baseball bat.

>flails often weighed 10-20 pounds

You want to know how I know you're making this shit up?

Let me tell you. Flails did not weigh 10-20lbs. Ever.

That's aside from the whole issue of "were flails used" (because what you think of as a flail, wasn't what they used. Look at the Hussite rebellion flails and Kettenmorgenstern; they're completely different in shape)

Lucerne hammers, and bec de corbin do sometimes, weight 4lbs. The majority of the original ones which I have handled in my career as a professional historian in arms and armour, in the collections of the Royal Armouries, The Glasgow Museums RL Scott Collection, the Wallace Collection, Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, and a host of other places, are not 4lbs. they are generally about 1.5-1.7kg, with a head weight of around 200-300g max. and that is a hafted weapon, not a bladed one. Bladed weapons are almost always lighter.

There are 6b greatswords. They are predominantly parade swords, such as the dozens of the sort in the Zeughaus Graz. Actual two-handed swords were uncommon, certainly in the medieval era, really only rising in popularity in the 16th C, but they, too tend not to be as massive - anything over 2.5kg, maybe 5lbs, tends not to be practical for actual use. that applies to scots twa-handit, german bidenhander, and iberian montante alike.

As an example, this is around 2.2kg.

Realistically a Rapier.
Rapiers have the greatest range and the are the swiftest.
Stabs are hard to block and all it takes is well place poke to disarm and kill. on a second note A cut and thrust guard sword, has the legnth and pokey power of a rapier and the cutting ability of an arming sword.

Lightweight
Decent range

>I know that katanas break easily

This is a meme spread by some shitty youtube vids. The problem is where they get their katanas -- how much do you think they're willing to spend on something they're trying to break? $200? $500? $1000? It's toward the latter end that you actually have the proper layering of hard and soft steel. A proper layering pattern is, incidentally, also necessary for the flexible sabres and longsword-type weapons as well.

Now obviously the rigid-body swords like the katana and many others will break when forced to bend around like a lever at full strength, but this is quite difficult to do unless it's your absolute intention. Otherwise, the sudden point-on-point impact failure that you see in some of those youtube videos are evidence of shittily-made swords -- what is supposed to happen, at most, is that the blade should chip. Flexible swords would do this too in such tests, as their cutting edge is also quenched to be hard and brittle in comparison to the body.

Another point is that in Japanese swordsmanship you never ever clash with the cutting edge, ever. (It is also disputed whether you do this in Western swordsmanship either).

And of course battlefield excavations show almost no catastrophic failures among the few katanas and other swords not recovered.
