Step 1: Burn all lands
Step 2: Only run snow lands
Step 3: Run no creatures
Step 4: Quit fucking around
Step 5: Sell snow lands
Step 6: Buy premade deck
Step 7: Get mugged
Step 8: Loose all your cards
Step 9: Kill yourself

Assuming OP is serious, we need to know what format they want to play.

Commander is what I play

You build slower decks that focus around 1 legendary creature. No duplicates, so you're more focused on multiple cards that make good synergy. A good Commander play group can make for some very interesting games.
>>
>>688226360
Commander is honestly the most casual friendly as well as a wonderful extension that magic players can go through.

I have 2 Modern Decks and 3 Commander Decks, have spent much less on the commander decks but they can all win fairly easily

Go there and post a polite, humble thread asking for good learning tools for a beginner.

Wizards of the Coast, the publisher (?) Of the game says to "buy an intro deck or play MTG Duels to learn what colors and plsystyles you like best."
>>
>>688226557
This, a playgroup creates a lot of wonderful, or awful, memories, commander especially considering how one of your 100 interacts with one of their 100

Buy a budget deck that appeals to you from a list on mtggoldfish and then just go play it. ask the people that beat you what you could do better or what mistakes you made. don't do those things next time.

buy a starter deck and go over the rules. buy a deck builder or packs. buy a 20 sided die. buy deck boxes and buy lots of sleeves.
ultra pro makes quality cheep deck boxes and I prefer their sleeves because they're a little rugged on the back which helps with cutting decks. don't buy sleek sleeves. get cardboard boxes and a card binder.

Build a mono white banding deck.

Banding was the greatest ability printed in magic. It was so powerful that only one set ever used it. The best part is that cards for banding are all rather cheap so you can make a sleeper banding deck that will win at every FNM.

well if you show up at my fnm which has about 12-20 modern players every week with a budget deck and half a brain you can likely go 1-3 as some kid with a standard deck will be your opponent round 4. but for me I just chill and talk to the people there mostly about magic or how wizards is screwing us over. I'm never too concerned about how well I do, as at a small tournament like that, who cares if my junk company went 4-0, when i could have only played one other top tier deck. Just relax and have fun

Also, something to note, when people talk about decks, the names of decks usually go
[Color/Color Combination name] + [Theme/Key Card]

Honestly if you wanna be good in magic, find a deck that fits your play style. If you like to bum rush, do a soldier/token deck. if you like large monsters, do a beast red/green deck with buffs. those are a few examples
>>
Read the rules, mtgo comprehensive rules is the search. It's really dry but if you're serious about learning it's a good place to start.
>>
>>688230826
Modern works best with a lot of the same card.

A highlander format like Commander only allows one copy.
>>
>>688225966
you could also consider building a pauper deck. It's pretty cheap in most cases as it is just composed of commons but the power level is roughly the same as a modern deck (this obviously varies alot)
>>
Check out channelfireball.com and look for Marshall sutclife's videos. He is good for new players, once you know the rules.

>>688231408
also watching pros play kinda helps. try these channels for coverage of big tournaments:

Probably standard, it's much easier to understand because there's less everything there. Think of it as a cup of fresh water from the lake.
Everything in standard is modern legal, but almost everything in modern isn't standard legal. If you learn standard first, it will allow the transition from standard to modern much, much easier

Get familiar with the styles of color combos. Build around that or some mechanics/win conditions.

It's a matter of picking things that synergize well and making the opponent play your game.

However, if your playing competetive, you'll need to be ready to counter what popular decks are doing. This is where the sideboard really comes in handy.

I prefer kitchen table play, but I have some nice standard decks ready to go. Currently playing B/U Zombies. Good control and board presence as everything that dies comes back.

So just get familiar with your cards... or you know, play Eldrazi.

First of all, /tg/ would be a much better place to ask this question.
second, play all 5 colors, get a feel and understanding of how each play so you can better counteract them when you play against them.
Third, dont play standard. thats just a good way to waste your money. Play Commander or Legacy format so you can use all the cards you own.

Fourth: ???????

Fifth: Profit.

Jokes aside, player creatures with shadow and flanking. Bonus points if you can run an affinity deck. extra angst points if you run a new phyrexia deck.

Then you have the real beer pong phase which isn't skippable.
Anyway it's now ASH ketchups turn he summons Ymir from Smite to cast a spell of flame on you. 10/10 damage is done.
You are left writhing in pain until wait.... could it be.... yes! ITS JOHN CENA BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
Trust me it's not even close to being hearthstone. So one more thing this was only half of the first turn.
Now we go into the waiting phase.
Hitoro Iwata flys out from JAapane to persoannly ref the game.
OK now that the waiting phase is done we can go to the Call of duty phase. Trust me this one is gonna hurt. You have to have a team of 5 kids screaming "dumb shit fucks" at the top of their lungs at you as you're the only one left on the team in search and destroy.
If you disarm the bomb you may pass Go.
If you fail you go straight to jail.
When you master these steps you are finally ready to end your turn of Magic the grumblesnipes.

Fucking this. Me and my friends started to play casually. Over time they got better and more expensive cards , which I couldnt keep up with. One of my buds has spent well over $500 dollars on cards.

Some other cards from my primary deck. its mostly elemental's and massive destruction cards like Jakulhaups and decree of annihilation, with other fun things like shivan meteor. But to say the least I love Flowstone Overseer, he was such a great card to use in getting rid of indestructible monsters during mirrodin.

OP, i play magic, i use a white/blue deck with white only creatures but blue & white instants and spell card things also have a lot of the card pacifism. it stops that creature from attacking and blocking an attack also use flying creatures so normal monsters cant touch them.

Yep. Just play in a virtual setting. You'll be spending so much money to make a tournament ready competitive deck, and then you'll have to spend even more to keep up with the standard rotation. Not worth it in my opinion.

FNM's really vary depending on what store you go to. Currently, mine is a group of about 10-14 who just draft every week and play whatever format we want in between matches, and I really dig it.

I've been to some where it's just a standard event every week and I'm not really into that.

To be good? Play fucktons of magic.

Get Modo, get into pauper or build a good deck in a format you like. Learn the metagame, learn how to play and what mistakes you are making.

If you want to get some insight into the high level, go buy the books Patrick Chapin has written -- it gives a lot of good insight.

It's not easy. The game is complex as fuck, and a lot of neckbeards have dedicated their life to it -- so unless you _Really_ want it, you're never going to be pro-tour caliber.

banding was too powerful. You could whole groups of weak monsters into 1 'big' creature, and then when damage gets dealt, instead of the person blocking choosing how its damage was dealt, it was the player with banding. And so if you played some timely instants or had some field enchantments, you could spread damage around to the point where none of your creatures died. it was too powerful. the banding player had ALL of the control in combat.

>>688250923
The deck is about being a massive asshole, not about winning. Or else I wouldnt have cards like Jakulhaups and decree of annihilation. I have over two dozen decks. some were competative, others are just for fun.

If you think that is powerful, look up "That which was Taken". You also might be interested in a spell called "Entangler".

you should also look up both of the Akroma creature cards.

I actually use entangler in my white/green soldier deck, but I'll definitely put in "That which was taken" in my dragon deck

AVOID COCKATRICE AT ALL COSTS until/unless
A) You are confident in your rules knowledge and play skill.
B) You are playing with someone you trust and know will actually help you.

The reason I say this is because Cockatrice doesn't actually enforce rules or card interactions. So, you will get people that either
A) don't know what they're doing, which doesn't help you learn
B) are actually cheating you, which doesn't help you learn
C) are playing weird and difficult to follow decks that sometimes can kill on turn 1, or else take 20+ minute turns, which doesn't really help you learn
>>
>>688254176
I already have quicksilver amulet and dragonspeaker shaman. I was thinking about putting in dragonstorm, but I have sarkhan unbroken, and I'll definitely consider form of the dragon.

It came from timespiral. There has been a massive power creep since the start of 'modern' magic. It started with Mirrodin and has gotten really bad in some time periods. Mirrodin had the utterly broken Affinity and Indestructable. Time spiral really opened up the flood gates, then toned down a little bit. Then when Scars of Mirrodin happened, new Phyrexia was just so god -awful broken with infect (wither+poison).. then things have waned down a little bit. But if your use to 'old' magic, new magic is going to be a massive shock.

Color is not a stratagy.
>>
>>688226289
No shit that's why he's asking for advice, can you read?
>>
>>688257208
color is the start of a strategy. Some colors really only have access to certain types of spells. You will almost never find counter spells in red, just like you will almost never find trample in blue.

if you have a particular strategy in mind, color plays a major factor.
>>
>>688226933
Bannding didn't make sense, it's basicly blocking with multiple creatures and mashing them together
>>
>>
>>688258018
banding allowed the banding player to choose how damage was dealt to their creatures, instead of the other player choosing damage. Not to mention banding creatures could band with 1 other creature that didnt have banding. Leading to some really broken shenanigans.
>>
>>
>>
>>688224949

1. invest hundreds of dollars.

2. buy the top netdeck.

3. look up how to play the deck since you're too useless to learn the game.

4. win.

>>688224949
A mana ramp deck. Basic lyrics you play spells that pull mana out of your deck directly. Also includes creatures and artifacts that produce mana. Then you finish off with Uber powerful cards that win the game for you.
