Truth be told, having more guns than are necessary for the shooting sports/hunting you may or may not participate in and self defense isn't practical. But for the most part, practicality is not really what it's about for me personally.
Same reason people have more than one car or jacket ect. They are different in perceptible and enjoyable ways, very few feel the same ergonomically or to shoot as another of different design or caliber. People collect them for varied reasons, some enjoy the history of a design or it's unique mechanics ect.
I have a modest collection of 14 and don't really see any end in sight, a few for hunting specifically, some for self defense purposes, some for the history or peculiarities of their design, others just because they are loud and fun to shoot.

Purely shits and giggles. They're lot of fun, and older models hold value well. Hunters may have different guns for different habitats/species/seasons. Another factor is you can't really try a particular gun before you buy it, and you can't return 'em, so you end up with some that aren't what you hoped for, but are just good enough to not end up in consignment.

Used racks are your best friends when just starting out. Visit them often, the darker the better. I saw a Hi-Point 9mm carbine for $225 today, and a Ruger 44 Carbine for $525.

I had a m/37 9mm in the army and then we switched to glock 17 not to mention the ak4 (big gun 30-06) which were reired and swapped for the ak5 (556) effektive gun. The M/58 30-06 machine gun and M/48 grenade launcher were our main weapons.
Not to mention a multitude of ground to air missiles and anti tank weapons like bill and tow missiles.
I was in the army first strike forces up until 1995 then i was transferred to the reserve.
My specialty was deep range scouting and assault attack (maybe a different term in english) and extended sabotage/guerilla warfare (jägarförband probably untranslatebale in english).
The last order after my unit was destroyed was to join the closest regular infantry unit.
One thing i remember when joining were that i thought hand-to-hand would be cool but we never trained more than the basics since hand-to-hand combat were considered a failure.
We were trained to either kill or blow up our targets without any hand to hand combat at all.
No idea how it is nowadays maybe hand-to-hand combat is a big thing, i can see myself with an army knife, shovel or axe hacking the life out of an adversary - not :D.

I know very little about guns. I don't own any, and I'm Canadian so it's much less likely that I ever will own any.
