I own many. Mostly practical, .308, 30-30, 30-06 for big game. .22 and .223 for small game/nuisance control. High and low caliber pistols for the same reason, though mostly for trap lines.
I also own a few "recretional/home defense" rifles as well. SKS and AR-15 in 5.56, some sort of Saiga 7.62x39 variant, I forget the actual name of it but it's quite similar to a knock-off AK. I really have no reason for home defense, I live in the middle of nowhere and there has never been a break-in that I know of since I've lived here. I just like to pop off some rounds for fun every now and then. If it really came down to it, though, I'd probably use one of my 12 gauges as a home defence weapon over a rifle. Shooting buckshot down a flight of stairs in the dark while half asleep would probably yield better results than blindly firing any sort of rifle.

it's really not. if you look at the stats for trauma centers, knife wounds have much greater mortality rates than gunshot wounds. even multiple gunshots. guns shoot a little piece of metal the diameter of a dime. a generic kitchen chefs knife destroys tissue in a channel as wide as 3 inches. you will lose much more blood from a casual stab wound from a kitchen implement than a misplaced shot from a handgun.
