They all saw the world as huggies and wuv and sketties, and the abusers were torturing them in their innocence. I think some of it is utter laziness. It's a lot harder to write a long story bringing a normal human being to hurting a stupid animal who doesn't know what it's doing. It's a lot easier to have the fluffies be horrible assholes so you can get to the good parts. What the older stories had IMO were greater satisfaction in the abuse because it was built up for longer before it happened.
