As an older person let me say well done for being responsible. Drugs should never be used in the way these people advocate them, to escape, just like alcohol shouldn't be used that way.
Weed is the kindest herb. She lets you relax, calm down (as an indica) and sends your imaginative perceptions to another level (more often sativa) though both strands do some of both. It's a mild hallucinogen and wont get you seeing things, at least not much, but will make sensations more vived and things a little softer. Some people react with paranoia because of their own self perception and insecurities which become more apparent. Weed loves you, and even if you do freak a little it's pretty harmless for grown adults unless a daily habit is developed. Once/twice a week or less. Smoke inhalation hurts your lungs, always, but the real danger of weed is letting it be so habitual that it becomes a hobby in itself. It's better to party with close friends or a lover and play video games or take a walk. It's the herbal maiden of your Hero's Journey.
