Well it looks like you can turn it off and on, so you're in a better boat than lots of folks.
If the coping mechanism of acting/sounding younger or more carefree helps you when talking to folks online then do it when you feel like it and try to ignore the negative reactions here and there. If the negative reactions lead to more stress than you'd feel speaking as an adult - change behaviors to match what causes less stress for you.
Being in a situation where it's kill or be killed, and coming out of it having chosen the "kill" option is something that will affect your disposition for the rest of your life, but the depression it will continue to cause doesn't have to win out over happiness.
While it may feel like a losing battle much of the time, each time you're able to have a couple hours without falling back on it is a victory that outweighs a week's worth of defeats.
