No, that isn't true. A contract for an enlisted soldier is an automatic eight years. They did it to combat that draft, which is how people now get "stop-lost."

I'm pretty sure the Army still does 2 and 3 year terms with an equivalent IAR follow up, but I didn't join the army. Just relying on the occasional scuttlebutt from parents I run across. It's possible I'm misremembering or just wasn't paying attention, but you know, part of being an 11B is keeping a detailed account of every branch's enlistment terms and thinking you're smart by failing to specify why each contract is "8 years".
I might just ask a recruiter across from the Starbucks about it if I have time, but I won't be losing sleep over it...

Almost nobody gets recalled so that 8-year "commitment" is BS in the real world except for Desert Shield/Storm and a very few exceptional other individual instances. Every G.I. knows this.
A two-year contract (yes, it carries six wildly unlikely possible years) is not much use since it takes longer than that to get good at anything. Four or six year AD makes more sense from a career POV.
Guard and Reserve can be hard to get into unless someone dies of old age but are often very good jobs. It helps if you have bros are already in the unit you join. That way when slots open you can move faster.
FWIW I've never known a Coastie to transfer to the Air Force. Plenty from other services though. Coastie life and training is respected. Haven't served with them but there must be a reason they aren't easy to get into besides the small population.
