I'm a 5'5'' male, hasn't really effect me in a negative way. I get an occasional "you're short" joke. But I have had several girlfriends, have a decent circle of friends, and can do basically any physical activity I want to. One funny thing I have noticed is I tend to walk really fast, even when I am alone. I think this is from me trying to walk at the same pace as people taller than myself.. which is most men and some women.
I guess the some of the negative things (which aren't really that bad) are a lot one sized fits all clothes, or any general use piece of equipment might not be exactly suited for your size. But I've worked industrial jobs and never had any issues were I couldn't complete my task.
But I think it is all a mindset. Just like "oh I have a small penis" syndrome. I believe in self fulfilling prophecies. So if you think people won't like you because of reason x, then that is likely going to effect your outward approach to everything you do and people well read that from your body language and confidence.

From my perspective, it's from a desire NOT to become the next Eric Garner or Mike Brown, actually doing something in life other than engaging in criminal activity. On a more anecdotal note, I'd say (for me at least) that it has to do with simply wanting to 'break free' from the stereotypes and sub-culture that collectively defines blacks as a people.
