Perhaps I was lucky enough to grow up in a country where the Muslims I know are good people, or perhaps you were unfortunate that your particular area is inhabited with the extremists.
I do not know enough about your area to conclude anything. But hopefully what I have to say next may alter your perspective of Muslims a little bit: countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia have been labelled traitorous (for having too many "infidels", a term you may be familiar with) by Muslim extremists. They hate that our peace-loving and 'normal' Muslims are deviating from the Quran, and as such have been labelled a target for terrorism.

There are thousands of scholars all tugging it in different directions, and the result is to simplify by taking it back to the core, barbaric teachings and practices of the qur'an.
