Why do you go to school for a degree only to take a management job in retail? Just go into retail out of high school and work your way up. Every penny you make will be yours.

Oil engineer is a poor mistake. The world is going far less dependent on oil. The oil industry is laying off a LOT of people. No longer a sustainable degree.

Any major that prepares you for a career.

Wanna be the CEO of pretty much any company? Finance or business degree. Just keep going and get your MBA so you can ball hard. Salary is capped with engineering and other "trade" degrees no matter how hard they are to get. Learn the flow of money and supply channels and you will be set for life, even if you want to become an entrepreneur.

Bad advice. Traditional retail is dying with Amazon and other online marketplaces taking over. Amazon isn't going to want someone without a degree. Think of a bachelors degree as pretty much the same as a high school diploma now. Pretty much necessary if you don't want to wash dishes.

Yes, except at the current time nations have oil supplies for up to 20 years. The oil reserves in the ground are depleting. There are already too many workers in the field. Many people at my father's company have been laid off.

Supply and demand works up until there is far too much supply for not enough demand. Right now we have enough supply for all current and near-future demands. There is no need to drill for further supplies as there is already far more than needed out of the ground. However in the future less will also be needed. We're developing fusion reactors, the Saudis are working on solar energy for themselves, firms are working on far more efficient solar energy systems. Heck, even some of the wind turbines in development seem to be providing suitable power. When the need for oil for cars decreases the supply will drop greatly too. Tesla are setting a precedent, many are to follow.

>>
>>684482346

No. But I was unlucky during my PhD as far as paper output was concerned. Also, my general field (regenerative medicine) is something which quite a few big players in the market do not pursue anymore.

Anyway, the output of PhD in the US and in Europe (looked for jobs in both) is much bigger than the demand.

Oil tends to run in 15 year cycles. In ten years it will be back on an upswing.

"renewable" energy is not financially sustainable using current technology. This isn't going to change any time soon. More oil than ever is being consumed, and half the world hasn't become industrialized yet.

Fossil fuels aren't going away.

Can a bachelor degree in a Community College with major in business administration and management get you a 100K $/year job ?

And what do you think about it ?
>>
>>684482290
They've made that claim that we've hit peak oil for over fifty years. The reality is that we have more than enough oil to sustain the globe for over 100 more years.

So far, there isn't a single "green" tech that is financially sustainable without government subsidies, and that especially includes Tesla.

Solar is the lease financially sustainable power source, followed closely by wind-power. Pull the subsidies and they will all fold within a year.
>>
>>684483505
How do you get a bachelors at a CC?
Mine didn't offer that.
>>
>>684483075
Except they are going away. They estimate that in around 2025 oil & natural gas will hit its peak, and after a number of decades following it'll solely be used for plastics. Oil may provide jobs for the next 10 years, but beyond then you're at great risk of being made redundant.

>>
>>684483748
Again, they've said that we've hit peak oil for over fifty years, and they haven't been right yet.

Oil isn't going anywhere. Hydrocarbons are the most efficient fuel source on the planet. Any green tech that is sustainable with involve the creation of new hydrocarbons.

Another molec bio here (never actually encountered another on a /b/ thread, this is a first) and I can also assure everyone that this is not a money field, researchers make shit. You have to be doing it for the love. The work isn't easy either, complicated protocols, long hard hours, done when the job is done, you often can't just leave a plasmid prep for PCR because it's 5:00, you need to get that shit in the thermocycler today.

I am looking at moving into DNA forensics since that's basically a lateral shift and you can make an ok wage (40-50k).
>>
>>684484151
Well ok, I didn't say they weren't fucking hot, just that they're not financially sustainable.
>>

And I went to a marine engineering school, so I know alot of marine engineers...
>>
>>684484315
True but they are quick to be hired
>>
>>684481440
>The oil industry is laying off a LOT of people.
OIil is cyclical, this happens every 10 years or so.
It's same in most industries but in oil it's more publicized.
Oil companies hang on to their best people in a downturn though
And the jobs pay well and are very easy to get when prices bounce back
>>
>>684484151
what percentage are these bad boys in silver i doth wonder
>>
>>684483853
Except that in America, our learning is so dumbed down that the bachelors degree is basically like passing high school. Now they've just figured out a way to make us pay for it.
>>
>>684483596
In the past 35 years solar power has been made more affordable by a factor of 100... Newer technology will increase this further.

Tesla isn't an energy source, it's simply utilising a mean to allow any source of energy to be used in products. Currently most cars require oil in one form or another. However if you just require electricity then you can use multiple sources of power, from oil to tidal. This allows an easy transition away from oil. So, in 20 years when most cars are being sold as electric they will easily be able to switch sources, unlike the current generation which only allows oil. No, renewable energy may be shit now, it may not work. However consider nuclear fusion. When it works, it will create much more power than we need, and it'll dwarf petroleum.

If you want a career in oil just get a more broad degree in engineering. Don't go oil specific.

People have been saying oil would be done in 20 years for a hundred years now.
Used just for plastics? Have you heard of fertilizer? Ammonia plants are big factories that convert natural gas to fertilizer, getting more popular and demand will rise, not fall.
People need more food and crop yields have to keep rising, that means more countries will adopt American farming techniques (highly mechanized, lot's of fertilizer)
>>
>>684484790
You probably want to get a business degree then. It's the best way to make money by being all "yo dawg" and not really knowing shit.

Paralegal law...it's and associates degree however, the drive to have lawyers do less and paralegals carry more of the work load. In NY you start at 18.25 but are usually hired at 20/25hr if you have any kind of experience beyond the basics.
>>
IWTF thought you could be lawyer with a Criminal Justice degree ?

if you want to be able to talk like that to the human resources department you might want to write a god level doctoral thesis and prove to be invaluable beyond your mannerisms.
>>
>>684484735

A factor of 100 and it is still the most unprofitable method of energy production, short of a hand-crank.

Tesla is symbolic of the entire "green" movement. It wouldn't exist without heavy subsidies.

Good luck with nuclear fusion. I'll bet on reality.

No, I'm not a petroleum engineer. I'm not even in the industry. My degree is in finance.
>>
>>684485019
>You probably want to get a business degree then. It's the best way to make money by being all "yo dawg" and not really knowing shit.

Not really. There are far to many PhDs on the market right now and neither academia, nor industry can accommodate them all. Most people just drag from one postdoc to another without any chance for a better job.

Petroleum Engineer here. Most people I know that got laid off were not Engineers. Companies tend to hang onto them, and just lay off all the hands. Not to say it isn't possible for an engineer to get laid off. Regardless if you are truly worried about the future sustainability of the oil and gas industry you still have plenty of time to get in, make your money, invest it, and then get out. Honestly thats what I feel like you should do regardless of your feelings on the future of the industry. But that is beside the point.

HEP that has worked for ATLAS here. The LHC is not a fusion 'reactor' you autist. I appreciate your recognition of science, but stop talking because you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. The LHC is a colliding beam particle accelerator. At no point do we attempt to harvest said energy or create a self-sustaining reaction (which is the idea of a 'reactor'). We slam shit together and attempt to detect as much debris as possible. Your claim that it's a reactor is as valid as claiming an collider around the world is a reactor (RHIC, Tevatron, SLAC, etc.)

In response to OP, if you have the balls and competence for it, study physics. It's pretty much a catch-all for mathematical sciences, and pretty much anyone will higher you because you can do math, and applied math.
