It will depend on the group that you're looking at. Some are going to be more welcoming than others, but for the most part, you can expect if they've got a meetup, they're open to new people. I have been to a few meet up events just for shits and giggles, not looking for friends, but I ended up becoming pretty cool with some people. I think the saying goes, you miss 100% of shots not taken. Something along that line.
I think if you do end up going, you'll be pleasantly surprised. If they wanted to be closed to outsiders, they wouldn't exactly advertise, you know? Give it a chance, and if works out, great, if not, there are plenty of other people and groups. You only have to be right once.

Definitely give it a try. There's plenty of groups on Meetup (and plenty of games to play online at Roll20) . Just, be prepared for the possibility of major autism being at the table. But, if you run into it, try to find a group that works.
My first game IRL was the shittiest group with one nasty autist female. Her dad ran the game and owned the shop if was held in. They'd constantly be arguing and she'd be hard headed with group decisions.
