Should i upgrade to Windows 10?
i have 7 and i have never used 8 or 8.1
>>
nope
>>
>>684258473
ok. What's the number 1 thing you want your os to do? Look flashy? no. New features you're never gonna use? nope. All your os should do is be stable and not prevent you from doing whatever the fuck you wanna do.
Also it's free. Things aren't free.

So yeah if you wanna be an unpaid beta tester go right fucking ahead.-
>>
>>684258473
if you're not concerned about privacy then switch.
I used win 7 at home and win 10 at work.
It feels like a superficial change of UI. Everything else under the hood seems to work the same.

People got pissed about the forced updates but I didn't encounter that, maybe we got different version at work (I think you can forced updates off in Enterprise edition)

If you think direct X is important then yes absolutely upgrade. Turn all the bullshit spying stuff off which is easy to do
>>
>>684259242
I only read rumors. But they seem to have a clause in their EULA where they say they'll phone home details about your files, your searches, etc.
Could be that they detect piracy. Wouldn't put it past them.

This, I've no clue why I upgraded, since everything is pretty much the same, with the exception of a few features I never will use it is completely pointless
>>
>>684258473
install gentoo instead
>>
All the functions that Microsoft use to collect data about you are present in windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

I think it's pretty good. Only problem is some slight driver problems but nothing that wasn't fixable.
>>
>>684259527
They do indeed have that clause in their EULA.
>>
>>684258473
Im torn op.

For one, the whole NSA SPY TOOL RAH RAH thing, whatever. Who gives a shit. They want into your shit, it doesnt matter what OS you use.

To be honest. Ive used every version of windows since 3.11, including weird or obscure builds, like CE for microwaves and shit like that.

and sadly, I quite like win 10. Its clean, you can do everything within a couple of clicks, or straight out of the start bar.

Forever and a day, it used to be about the desktop. OH GOD I MUST KEEP MY LEGACY DESKTOP.

I barely even look at the desktop anymore. The shortcuts dropped there are usually just default on install that I cbf deleting.

I guess im a convert.

Or the weird NSA brain rays they push through it have gotten to me.

Either way, I find it works, its fucking fast, and seems pretty damn polished.

You guys are actually way too tin-foil with your privacy concerns.

I work at Microsoft.
Windows 10 (and pretty much all Microsoft products) phone home with ANONYMISED DATA such as the following:

How long did "generic_action_X" (think opening the start bar) take, what part of the process was slow? [Used for improving performance in future fixes]

When the user searches, do they then click on a result? (no search terms, only metadata about query length and click/ranking positions) [Used to evaluate Cortana/test if tweaks improve or degrade her performance]

What sort of hardware does the user have [Used to prioritise fixes/performance tweaks and you can estimate how many devices will be affected]

It's impossible to track anything about a particular user, it's collapsed into a meaningless ID so you can identify a session, but with no way to actually work out who that is.
Anything that could be used to identify a user or what programs they are using is forbidden to track.

Also, I worked many places before MS. If you think any big company (Google/Amazon/Apple/...) isn't doing this, you're a fool.
>>
>>684258473
Wait for around another year or 2. I've had to sort out a lot of old people's PC's that have upgraded and there is so much to do to set it up to A) not spy on everything you do and B) stop it advertising everywhere and C)remove all the pointless bloatware shitty apps.

The problem with Windows 10 is that it's basically shit in every way that counts.

Stable? No.
Secure? No.

Also, what you are referring to as 'Windows 10' is actually 'Windows 10 + NSA'.

Windows 10 LTSB masterrace!

No but seriously, upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 pro but got really angry about all the crap that crep into my pc along with the upgrade.
All these modern apps are completely useless mobile ports that should not be used on anything that have more processing power than your phone.

Wiped my computer and installed Windows 10 LTSB which is basically Windows 7.1 with a bit more modern UI. No modern apps at all (nice), but no native picture viewer because windows photo viewer is now an app (not nice). [Install Pictus which I found better anyways]

I sort of like it but had to install some fixes to the more retared features of windows explorer... WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE THE DETAILS PANE ON THE ENTIRE RIGHT HAND SIDE???

Theres such a thing as oversaturation too.

The point of where so much data becomes completely overwhelming and ambiguous. Even if it could be archived, databased and kept. It would be hammered.

Every second, of every day, for whats a standard shelf life of an OS, 5 years?

Yeah, good luck making a meaningful interpretation out of that mess.

Youd have to be rainman even to link up a certain event at a certain time.

I dig it, like I said, I come from a long line of windows usage.

I get the ending every non essential task mentality, modifying your startup, using lighter or cut down versions of programs etc.

But in reality, the overhead is that low, its hardly perceptible.

Maybe ive just lost my care.

But the reality is, it does not matter what you run, or how tight you lock it down, if its on the internet, it has to be considered open.

The gubmint really doesnt care. Unless youre brown skinned and like non christian religions.

I can only lose, whichever answer I give you someone will call bullshit on me and tell you their option is the superior choise, but here I go:

I've used the two big mainstream options Ubuntu and Linux Mint, but I've also tried the extremely tinu LXLE.

They are all quite easy to use after getting to know them. I would probably recommend Mint as your first switch from windows to a linux enviroment.

My biggest recommendation is however, to learn how to use the terminal as it will solve any and ll problems you will ever have.

>Theres such a thing as oversaturation too.
Typically different teams look at different metrics.
There's 100k + engineers, everyone has a piece of the pie to improve.

> Every second, of every day, for whats a standard shelf life of an OS, 5 years?
Win10 and web apps are continuously updated, you look at the last week or month and draw conclusions from that.

> Youd have to be rainman even to link up a certain event at a certain time.

You aren't looking at individual events, you are looking for trends that affect significant segments of the user-base.
I diagnose issues in other people's code in this way and drive improvements on a daily basis, it's really not that difficult once you have a good framework built up.
>>
>>684262668
no, its more that, your going to be spied on, no matter what you run/install/do.

Owner of a computer repair company here:

If you game or only use the internet/don't care about computers, yes.

If you use your computer to do work (Quickbooks, AutoCAD, PhotoShop, etc) or generally need it to do productive things, no.

You really will not get benefit from Win 10 YET until about 1st quarter of 2017 when everything is ironed out. I would make sure you hit "reserve" before June/july so you still get it for free, but you don't really want/need it unless you also have a windows phone/tablet/xbox for device integration.

By 2017, the apps will be up to date and the new phones will be out and then yes, definitely upgrade.

windows 7 wasn't perfect, but perfectly usable. win 8.1 brought a lot of performance and stability improvements, especially if you use an SSD for your OS. it also brought a slight change in the user interface, a change that is currently still being improved and balanced.

if you hate the new interface so much, that performance stops mattering to you, stick with win7

As long as you don't fuck up the upgrade or you don't have any weird issues with your computer you can just uninstall the upgrade if you don't like it within 30 days.

UNINSTALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS BEFORE YOU UPGRADE!

which, is pretty damn difficult to do when downloading and setting it up, online.

Its not an iso, its an active upgrade.

I'd set up a VM first and test it to see if it's compatible, you like it, etc. Testing it now at work to see if we can roll it out. There are several issues if you're in an enterprise environment, but it should be fine for most home users.

You fool, for all your claimed intellect, you've been blinded by the people you so readily welcome to anally rape you.

Don't you get it, the old days of physically taking your rights are gone. The face of modern fascism is one that appears to be a democracy on the surface, yet functions like a fascism in all other aspect. You say to save our energy because we have the illusion of free speech, religious choice, and voting rights? I say your physical rights have already been captured digitally by the creation of such agencies like the NSA, CIA, and DoD.

Stop hibernating for a day that will never come, instead get up and fight now. But I suppose my words land on a coward who has convinced himself that he is simply saving his energy for an easier day.

I'm just an average user, but here is what I think about windows 10.

Its a nice OS. Boots up nicely fast, has a good bunch of on-board features.
I also yet have to find one of my old programs that I used on Windows 7 / 8 that is not compatible with Win 10.

If you're concerned about unnecessary standard programs or the spying stuff, I can strongly recommend this tool: http://dws.wzor.net/ (if you don't want to click that shit, simply google destroy windows 10 spying).

If you're still scared about your data information being stolen, sure, stay with Windows 7 or whatever you're currently using. They're fine too.

TL;DR Windows 10 is light and comfy. No reason for the >average< user to not use it.

I just recently set it up for my dad who's windows 7 computer just died. I did NOT notice a performance upgrade at all. If anything it seems more clunky than his 6 year old windows 7 desktop. Just the simple task of navigating and moving around the files for him was very awkward and I'm still not use to it. When I tried to set certain restrictions on it to prevent him from giving himself a virus it literally would not ALLOW me to access the policy editor to accomplish this. He is also upset with the fact that it updates automatically and there's nothing I can do to prevent this. It's at that point I realized how fucked I'm going to be when I eventually have to use this piece of shit OS.

tldr: I gave it a fighting chance and it sucked. So I'll be rocking Windows 7 for as long as possible.

short an easy answer?

Apple: Default config, minimal mixture of parts, everything standard and off the shelf, multiple same parts spanning across productlines.

PC: A world of part choices and combinations, allowing for any number of fuckery and fun within.

They have to spend the majority of their time reigning in vendors with driver rewrites over and over and over.

Not spend their development time deciding if they want the pale blue or cornflower blue on their safari icon.
>>
>>684272676
But that's the thing, average cucks like myself don't want to deal with compmgmgmfmfmg.msc shit. We admit we're not as hardcore as you fine people snorting coke all day. >>
>>684272905
>Apple does [design] their software to be beautiful and useful

we'll never agree there.

i think microsoft is simply trying to tie all its different code bases (windows, windows mobile, windows rt, xbox, ...) into a single product. that would be for efficiency and cost saving.
getting desktop users used to mobile metaphors helps them getting there, but that was the riskiest part of their gamble. they're now rowing back and trying again in win10 with a softer approach and more patience towards traditional desktop metaphors.

I get that. I mean, that's pretty much been my excuse for sticking with Windows. But I just hoped that Microsoft will eventually be able to find a good balance between design and compatibility without having to go closed system like Apple.

At first, it looked like Vista was going to be that perfect balance. Freaky, they nailed the design aspect but at the expense of compatibility. I guess I just have to settle with the fact that windows will never be as smooth as Apple OS if it also needs to be open ended.
>>
>>684272964
my point exactly, I was working on a mini laptop cheap one $200.00(cpu 2.3ghz dual I used to have one and it ran linux and emulated games just fine. This computer comes prepackaged with windows 10. first time I've ever played around with windows 10 especially on a low end computer. But that is fun reducing resource usage to make a functioning computer right? Spent hours figuring out tha pretty much you cant disable antimalware service excutable, you have to go into service host another resource hog and disable that, and you have to do a reg fix to stabilize the cpu. After this process antimalware still runs and at this point I just downgrade to 7 runs games fine. I have 10 running in my main laptop and it does ok still resources are being wasted on the built in spyware that comes prepackage with windows 10. I used windows 95, 2000, vista, xp, 7 and I thought those were restrictive but now I find windows 10 to suck. I liked windows 8 but they can keep 10.
>>
>>684272905
>I don't understand how Microsoft ended up here. Everything they do now seems to cringe worthy, awkward, and forced.
It really doesn't, you just don't see the enterprise side where the real improvements are made.
>I've been a PC guy throughout, but seeing them fail so miserably on almost everything they do is just depressing.
Your scope is limited, so of course you think they "fail at everything", but if that were the case, their stock would be collapsing, which isn't the case.
>If only they would put a fraction of the effort Apple does in designing their software to be beautiful and useful...
iTunes is the clunkiest, most garbage piece of software I've ever had the displeasure of using. I haven't had much experience with other apple software, but your requirements seem superficial and misguided. There is plenty of robust, useful software made by Microsoft. I sincerely doubt your claims that you were ever a "PC guy" (you probably mean windows fan, but I digress). There are pros and cons to every OS. You sound like a fanatic that's cherrypicking from a limited and ill-informed pool of knowledge.

Visual Studio can be pretty fantastic to work in. Active directory can do some cool shit too, if you maintain it and your network properly.

The D-Wave One quantum computer (which bears more than a passing resemblance to the monolith) consists of 128 superconducting quantum bits or ‘qubits’. The computer works on the principle of quantum annealing. Essentially, it involves preparing some sub-group of the qubits into their lowest-possible energy state, or ‘ground state’, and then performing a series of operations to put it into a more complex ground state that can’t be easily solved using classical methods.

No, their shit may be expensive but at least it's decent quality and pride is taken in their UX. Instead Microsoft have outsourced their UX to India. At least I hope so, because there's no other way to defend it.

is that why you have to fiddly find the exact 3x3 pixel red circle to close a window under mac os?
and windows users just have to slam their mouse into the upper right corner and click in any given scenario to do the same?

That's an issue if you don't deploy AD correctly. That will be an issue in any domain hierarchy if done incorrectly. Shit takes planning and maintenance, yo, including checking replication logs (trust me, shit is no joke). But, yeah, I used to teach about AD and it's pretty robust. I've never used FIM, but management software is Microsofts bread and butter.

Vulcan a shit and so AMD. Seriously though, in the PC gaming world AMD almost always falls flat because nVidia is so much better at nabbing deals with devs in that market. I seriously doubt Vulcan will gain any legitimate foothold in the market if history is any indication. It's sad, but the likely outcome.

>>684275688
I never said they do no wrong, I merely pointed out that someone has their head up their ass if they think windows is failing. Also, line-by-line was to address each point in a logical hierarchy. Not sure why you're going ad hom instead of disputing/refuting my claims, but here we are.

They've been trying, but it's not their priority (which is enterprise, which is why they make so much money). I do wish they would step up their gui game a bit and make sensible changes, but that's why I stick to snap-ins, console commands and the like (it's often faster to input than a gui can be anyhow). I don't do a whole lot of administration outside of my household anymore anyway, but I am comfortable with windows and can bend it to my will without too much effort. Once you've been using a company's software for 25+ years, it's not that easy to switch, though I'll probably use *nix for my servers once I get the funds to build what I'd like in order to avoid software costs.

You're right, let's use Apple's less than perfect closing mechanism to generalize their entire design ideology. I suppose it's much less forgiveable compared to the fucking abomination of a start menu in Windows 10.

I mean seriously, what the fuck happened there. It's like it's transgendered, it's neither a here nor there. Or perhaps that was a deliberate design choice by Microsoft to attract the new generation of gender confused teenagers and offer them a safe space.

I hate to keep having to take Apple's side since I'm a windows user myself, but you butthurt Microsoft droids make it so incredibly tempting.
>>
>>684258473

1. Don't upgrade to Windows 10 unless you absolutely need to do so to do something.
2. Get Virtualbox.
3. Get Linux Mint. (I've found Linux Mint KDE works best on Virtualbox.)
4. Install Linux Mint on Virtualbox.
5. Use Linux Mint on a virtual machine inside of Windows and get used to it. Try to use it as your "main computer".
6. Maybe next time you get a computer you'll wipe out Windows and just use Linux.

At least it's not spying on you and trying to get you to download new ways of spying on you like Windows does.

It's pretty common for windows faggots to talk about windows within the usage of enterprise. It's really weird. They think home pc users employ AD & GPE and shit. They're out of touch with reality.

windows isn't failing from a business perspective infact they are thriving on hipsters that love there new gui. What support specifically does windows 10 offer over windows 8 through as far as enterprise applications are concerned. I would say 7 is fairly user friendly and any level data entry clerk can manage windows 7. is this about less privileges to end users so the admins have more power? I am just rambling and speculating not busting your chops but I would like to know what windows 10 provides the industry over any other operating system.

Thank you for making a sensible point not filled with unnecessary fanaticism. I actually get what you're saying.
