/b/ I'm looking for a book basically it's about energy spheres that are created and freeze time inside, they are basically silver spheres from outside. has two major parts. cover is a futuristic jet fighter with a tree growing in the cockpit. seriously can't fucking find this book again.

all of them are great, except for the 8th book. it takes place between books four and five and it's just... filler, doesnt really advance the plot. it's just about one of the main characters backstories. if you get to book four and dont like the idea of a story being told within a larger story then skip 8 altogether/read it out of order of chronological events.

Doesn't he always end his plots with some kind of magic that has nothing to do with the story, but is just there to end the book? Example: The two armies meet on the battlefield, the hero is about to kill the evil guy, and BAM! God smites everything, the end?

Without trying to spoil anything there are books that end with something like what you describe, a "twist" if you will, but pretty much every time it leads to something in a different book. It's never just "I ran out of ideas so let's end it here" kinda thing. And there's never any real heroes or evil guys, just the story being told from one perspective most of the time.
>>
>>684205655
The world comes up with some kind of zero point energy shit that basically eliminates threats. The power applied makes a bigger/smaller sphere. Bomb going to go off? Seal it in a sphere. Enemy soldier approaching? Seal him in a sphere. Whole navy coming at you? Use a really, really big sphere.

Basically the technology isn't quite understood and the spheres have a mirror finish and are permanent. It's a pretty drastic measure, and nobody knows what is happening inside the spheres, only that no energy can get in or out.

The whole first half of the book explores the idea and the increasing commonness and also the size of things that can be sphered. You know at first it's tiny things in a lab, soon it's a part of warfare, becomes common enough to be used for self defense and large enough to trap a whole fleet.

The second half
===========SPOILERS INCOMING=======
I hate to post if someone hasn't read it but the spheres start popping. The protagonist basically wakes up in his plane with a giant tree growing in the cockpit 30 years later and is the first person to figure out that the spheres pop. Science gets a lot more elaborate with the spheres now that it's known they are temporary, and they are used for new things (drop nuke, sphere up for explosion, sphere expires, sphere aka ship propelled with no damage, repeat) It goes into a pretty wild chain of events throughout history then and trying to save the human race.

It's not sphere by michale criton, it's not forever war, it's not seeds of time by kay kenyon (but that 's a great book as is anything by kenyon)

I know it's not his best, but I think I got lucky by reading it when I was 14. The way it talked about how normal sexuality was, was pretty helpful at that age. And I think it helped me move me past alot of the "know one understands me" and "eveyone sucks" edgy teenage angst that everyone goes through.

Same for the movie.

Every fan of Sci Fi needs to watch "Jodorowskis Dune", and discover 1, what was supposed to be, 2, the greatest sci fi movie of all time, and 3, where the most iconic and recognizable scenes from the greatest sci fi filas ever since actually came from.

As if we needed more evidence illustrating how movie studio execs don't understand Jack and can't get anything right to save their lives.

>>684223996
man I've thought along the same lines, but not related to lucifer's hammer.

like how would you force people to have a village- have one major and one minor skill. you can be a farmer and produce enough food for 6 people, or you can be a minor farmer and produce enough for three.

you can be a defender and protect the village, or a minor defender and protect the same amount with two friends.

defender relies on farming to eat, farmer relies on defender to not get his ass killed; expand to enough necessary skills that people cannot survive for long with only the single major/single minor skills.

so you could have three players with defender/farmer making enough food for six people, but they couldn't actually build housing or defenses (builder). once a community got to a moderate size you could open up specialties for minor skills (glass blower) or something.

like I said, I was coming at it from the design of "how do I make players work together to survive"

I cherrypicked some stuff from six random pages and did several Bart Simpson level reports and illustrations, I don't really remember but I got a B or something and I *still* haven't the faintest clue about what the book was about, nor have read any of it.

That was the same thing that i was think too.
How do you build the base mechanics of the game so the players need each other for survival. My though was that you could have basic skills but you would only have one specialized skill and there would be limited level advancement to the skills unless you chose to specialize or focus on that skill.

see I'd cold make it so you couldn't do anything that wasn't a minor skill, at least no for long. like it would take 20 non-defenders to equal a defender skill, or you could scrounge or grow 1/2 a person's food without scrounger or farmer skills. weight it so you could live for a while but couldn't possibly keep playing without finding a farmer.

the boring shit has to be valuable too, but you still need to be able to play the raider side of the table. yeah, I'd be curious what you actually come up with.

While I enjoyed Ender's Game as much as the next bloke, I find myself rereading more of his lesser known novels such as Treason and Enchantment.

There's something especially endearing about Enchantment for me.

the beginning is good but then he gets all mopey and does a whole bunch of alternative hippie shit, not really my thing

This.
>>
>>684206288
tried reading it
it comes off as childish, directionless, uninspired and boring
the "morally grey" thing is already done to death in modern fiction since it mostly means shallow or incoherent in characterization instead of actually morally complex
my biggest gripe is that it reads as something aimed at teens, which isnt exactly what i want from my horror/fiction books
the fact desert post apocalyptic worlds were done by now much better in other titles dosnt help also

I bought them used. I get almost everything used. It encourages me to impulse buy books I normally wouldn't since they're cheap and I've found several authors/series that I like enough to go out and get a nice set of.

I read A LOT.

Shame about the mediocre or even awful sequels to those.
Both great books that fail to make a memorable series and live up to the potential they have.

Dresden Files are REALLY good

Yeah, some of them have gotten pretty strange, but I do enjoy them.

Just finished reading the full 4 book Cantos, other than all the annoying poetry bits I really enjoyed the series. Endymion and Rise of Endymion were almost better than the hyperion books I felt.

Out of all five books (original trilogy I consider a single book) I think I enjoyed the 2 preludes the most. The trilogy was written quite a while ago and I had trouble reading due to the language and way it was written. It wasn't really fun to read unlike the 2 prequels which really had me in the story.

The Ender series is so insanely expansive, but I love almost all of it. Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind kind of suck, but all the books following Bean are great as well as the 3 prequels. Ender's Game is such a great book, it sucks the movie adaptation cut a lot of the scenes that made the book so great.

Gene Wolfe is an awful author and you should feel bad for posting this.
No its not a good read, its typical edgy teenager shit, the only worse series in that regard would be The Broken Empire.
Mark Lawrence and Wolfie should run a contest for who can write the edgiest most "morally grey" kid super warrior special snowflake character, lets throw in Patrick Rothfuss and his craptastic Harry Potter rip off series, and we have the holy trinity of awful overrated writing that ruin modern fantasy.

There are times /b/ really shows its true age.

This would be one of those times

GOD YES, when Michael Crichton writes a good book, HE WRITES A FUCKING GOOD BOOK.
Kept a pocket copy of Jurassic Park on me through Middle and High school, read it so much the front and back covers fell apart and I had to buy a new one recently. I kept it in the cargo pockets on my pants and read it during class. :)

Air Frame, Sphere, and Timeline are all REALLY good.

Its worth seeing, but not if you devoutly love the book and don't want to see it generic-ized for the masses basically. They did the same thing with The Giver.
