The problem that I have with most gun control proposals (not just this cycle but the past few decades) is that they're very superficial, to say the least. If you aren't into guns then you'll never know the difference, and most of the people who write/push these laws don't know any more than you do (no offence) so it's the blind leading the blind.
What ends up happening is you get these contrived, cryptic, legalese nonsense bans that don't see the forest for the trees. "Assault weapons" is probably the biggest farce, since the AWB that we had nationally in the 90s as well as the one still in place here in CA is mostly about cosmetic features that make the gun LOOK military-ish, and not about the function of the gun.
Even then, the mechanical function of the gun doesn't matter really. People are either dangerous or they aren't. If you can't be trusted with one gun you can't be trusted with any of them, and if you're just going to shoot at paper targets, then what difference does it make what kind of gun you shoot?
"Gun control" shouldn't even be about guns. It should be about the root issues that cause violence in the first place, and separating those who have proven themselves to be untrustworthy from those that are just minding their own business.

Hard to say though. There's more than just one root. Part of it is the huge gang culture we have here. And no, that is not some backdoor racism, it exists in all colors. The majority of homicides in our country (going by FBI stats) are gang and drug related, and thats both gun and non-gun killings.
Then you'd have to see what causes the desire to join gangs and what makes the illegal drug market worth killing over, and I'm sure there's a few more levels after that too.
But the good news is, if you fix one or two root problems you'll fix a dozen symptoms along with it. Gun violence is simply a manifestation of serious problems in the way some people think and act, it's not something that you can just legislate away.

It seems like even outside of gang activity there's a huge amount of violence. Like most of the country has a mindset that jumps to violence before anything else.
