The thing is, 'looking cool' and 'rebelling against your parents' are really important when you're 12. So kids get addicted young, and by the time they realized what a shitty decision they've made, they're already seriously addicted. It's too late to 'just stop' without effort.

You are more likely to get cancer from food than cigarettes. Unless you plan on being an athlete, there's no real reason not to smoke. Just don't become a heavy chain smoker and you will never develop any significant illness. Smoke less than 5 a day for the rest of your life. My grandparents, and great grandparents all lived well past a hundred on both sides with relatively good health and smoked at least a pack a day. Perhaps some are genetically not pussy. Regardless I don't smoke regularly. I smoke on occasion socially. And before everyone accuses me of addiction, I only smoke like 3-5 times a month (typically on weekends when I smoke weed, and when I'm really stressed) and have been pretty easily not addicted for about 5 years now.
