I want to teach myself how to like punk, so where should I get started?
So far I have Green Day and My Chemical Romance, but they're really mainstream.
I really like the upbeat stuff like American Idiot, Basket Case, and Welcome to the Black Parade.
>inb4 edgy faggot
Yea, but I have grown tired of hip hop, I keep listening to the same things over an over again.
It's all Illmatic and Mm.. Food, no other artists have meaning.
Can't say whether or not this is punk but it's close enough,
Tears Don't Fall - Bullet for My Valentine
Drown - Bring me the Horizon
Still Waiting - Sum 41
There is - Box Car Racer
again, might not all be punk but i listen to a lot of punk and i really like these
This is seriously all you need. To start, anyway. Changed my perspective on music forever, and every single song they wrote is at least 8/10.
Nah fuck punk
Go indie we got the best sad but not really songs
But if you still want to go punk listen to shit like rise against and the wonder years
>yo this pile of trash is kinda like punk
>I listen to a lot of punk, honest, but here's this pile of trash
ITT: petulant teenagers who hate their parents
All good picks.
ESPECIALLY this though.
I guess I'd recommend Joy Division for starters.
Pixies are not "punk" Pixies are just good old rock music. Pixies are like wayyyy too good musicians to be considered punk.
The world punk literally means "noob". Punk was created by novice musicians that only knew a few chords but still wanted to write songs. The Ramones are a good start. Then there's the Clash, operation ivy, the misfits, the adicts...
Rancid is fairly accessible and pretty well respected. Listen to Rancid.
Ska is pretty much always uptempo and good way to ease yourself into punk
Drown - Bring me the Horizon
Still Waiting - Sum 41
-- These songs are similar to what I'm looking for. If these aren't punk, please enlighten me to what they are so I can find more of it.
Also, The Ramones was a great suggestion, love 'em.
Dead Kennedys. Start with Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.
Pennywise. My fave is About Time.
NOFX... because you gotta, the tragedy of them is that after they came around everyone wanted to sound like them and it's why we have dozens of samey sounding punk bands.
The Clash. Punk is attitude, not a sound.
and fuck the Sex Pistols, they were a phenomenon, it's too late to enjoy them, all you get when you buy their albums is shitty music from people who don't play instruments.
start with buddy holly, who wasn't punk but whose music was one of the blueprints for the ramone's sound, along with the beach boys
iggy pop and MC5, important pre-punk
then ramones, often said to be the first punk band.
sex pistols (although they're overrated)
punk sort of morphs into new wave and post-punk with Blondie, Talking Heads, the Cars. alongside them were legit punk bands black flag, bad religion, dead kennedeys, and slash/punk hybrids like suicidal tendencies.
that shit OP is talking about is just shit. people using the label punk to sell records.
Rancid - out comes the wolves
anything operation ivy
uhh. Transplants are pretty cool.
casualties are fun.
GBH is fun as well
DRI is fun.
big d and the kids table is fun as well.
some of this is ska/punk so bare that in mind but its punk. there is no actual definition of punk you dont have to listen to punk music to be punk but the genre itself is rich except when you look at all t he stupid as fuck subgenres.
good suggestions here, i'll add:
jason and the scorchers
I forgot Rancid, but somebody mentioned them. More importantly, I forgot Operation Ivy.
I just got cancer reading that
I've listened to a LOT of stuff in Hip hop, I kept searching for everything imaginable, even resorted to Kendrick--which wasn't actually that bad. Things like Slick Rick, G Rap, Wu-Tang, the list goes on.
plebs can only like one type of music.
It's not a fucking lifestyle commitment unless you're an epic tool. Most well rounded people like many styles of music, and don't let it define their entire existence.
Also, pop punk is more understandable and the drums are more syncopated correctly--not the semi-offbeat "I just hit shit" on the drums, even though I get it, it's the punk attitude.
All of this shit is fucking terrible.
Fall Out Boy is probably the worst out of all of them.
Hah, I found it impossible to take you seriously OP but I guess many didn't. Or maybe people into punk want to be helpful. Anyways that's some nice bait I suppose.
You have poor taste in music and limited brain capacity if you don't get fugazi.
It's basically improv jazz bebop with a punk aesthetic. Sound sculpting, noise shaping, soundscapes. It's next level shit man.
Someone has the right idea.
Who gives a fuck if it's mainstream
Again, please enlighten me to what they are because I really like it and want to find more.
For the second time, not bait again just trying to find music I like
Such fucking autism.......
Punk died in the late 80's/early 90's... Bands like GREEN DAY were responsible for its death...
NOFX is punk but isn't punk; they're one of those on-the-edge kinda punk rocks...
Also, I used to like punk, but it is so hard to listen to once you develop a real music sense....
While I agree with what you're saying, you sound like a twat.
This is exactly why I like pop punk over old punk.. I just don't understand the drums. It's basically all shit mixed in.
Green Day has mastered the art of new punk, you might as well call it Green Day punk.
They are "shitty pseudo-emo pop punk". No other way to say it, really. They are what big labels push out to replace real punk with something that has a much higher appeal / profit margin.
The direction you're taking in this thread is sort of the same as asking for a great italian homemade style pizza place to go to and have a memorable meal.. and then getting the cheapest frozen piece of shit on whatever seedy chain store you prefer instead because "you like it better".
Each to his own.
Green day stopped being punk when punk went out of style in the mainstream. Their past echoes in American Idiot but everything beyond that has been forgettable. X-Kid was okay.
>real music sense
Because it's impossible to like different genres at the same time right
That's horrible you resorted to Kendrick I'm sorry to hear
There's always Eric b and rakim, rbl posse, totally insane, madlib, mf doom, smif n Wessun, big l, Master ace and much more hip hop is not that dead jaja
>Green Day and My Chemical Romance
It's not something you can teach yourself to like. It either speaks to you or not.
That being said,
the question is why punk? why not get into some Flying Lotus or Thundercat if Hip Hop audio aestthetic is what youre into theres plenty to jump into sense hip hop as a genre borrows so much from other genres. Why not some soul and funk from b in the d?
Modern baseball, the front bottoms, cymbals eat guitars, if you want to listen to possibly the greatest theatrical pop punk album of all time check out say anything's 'is a real boy' but for a more fat bass oriented blink 182 style but with good lyrics check out hard girls.
Alright OP, I pride myself on having a broad musical taste. I listen to a lot of hip-hop, R&B, indy, rock, basically any kind of music I can get my hands on. I don't believe in listening to one kind of music. Music is so wonderful that listening to only one genre doesn't do it justice. That being said, punk rock is fucking shit. I hate one musical genre, and it is punk rock. It's like rock, except it's sung by a bunch of little boy bitches who think they're all cool and edgy, just like you faggot. Not to mention that the primary listeners of punk rock are teenage girls who swoon over Green Day, Sleeping with Sirens, and Bring Me the Horizon, all of which are shit tier bands. If you even think about joining into that group, the you sir deserve to be fucking shot. And that's all I have to say about that. Good day
It doesn't bother me that /b/ has shit taste in music
What bothers me is that /b/ doesn't know how shit its taste is
Half this thread is stupid fucking children thinking their shit band is edgy and rebellious and thus "punk". NO. Punk is sounding raw and dirty cause that's all you know how to do. Punk is quick, energetic, and audacious. THIS is punk.
If you're as young as I think you are, try The Refused--specifically The Shape of Punk to Come. New Noise got me into the music I listened to all through highschool. It's not punk, but it's got punk influence that's more accessible for someone of your flavor.
Second that, Again a little pop punk but a good intro. Actually an excelent intro, every song features licks and references to classic punk songs, and the band is sort of an all-stars cast from a number of prominent bands
>implying r&b is in any way better
You're entitled to your opinion, but I just want to point out that hip hop is just as edgy, except for it's teenage black boys instead of teenage white boys.
Oh yeah, and one more thing. If you think hip-hop doesn't have meaning, then you haven't listened to goddamn genre dude. Lemme guess, you listen to shit tier rappers who rap about drugs, money, and bitches exclusively. Go listen to some fucking Mick Jenkins faggot
OP here again
Goddamn what is with all these pre-teen voices? Is it because they're white? Fuck.
So far blink-182, NOFX, and Offsping have had terrible singing voices.
I'm fucking done, goddamn.. >>683694323
This is what I'm going to resort to.
Agreed. I'm only listening to this shit because I like the upbeat feeling..
>>683693391 oh well, if not bait, just listen to the punk-o-rama compilations and find what you like from that. I'm sure there's stuff you'd enjoy on there it's a lot of upbeat stuff. Was my introduction into the genre when I was a child. I find that to be about the finest line between mainstream and punk that you can really get into without being a total dork.
The Wonder years is the best pop punk band in the world
Embrace your faggotry, OP. .
Go to local shows! Find one around and bring a friend, or just go stag. I started going In highschool, and it changed my life.
Also don't feel bad for digging green day or mcr. you do do you, homie.
Get a few compilation/sampler albums and see if anything piques your interest. The Punk-O-Ramas from like 99-04 were good for just a taste
OP is a faggot.
You don't know shit about shit.
We will let you know the day that those stupid assholes you call green day begin to approach anything resembling punk.
Protip: Not In Your Lifetime, faggot.
This would closely resemble my response.
However, if you first wish to "learn to like" something ( which at first sounds disingenuous) you must first "learn to appreciate" first
Bmth was metal core but they've moved from that with that drown nonsense. Check out the: tjere is a hell believe me I've seen it, there is a heaven let's keep it a secret album
The one before is even more metalcore.
They've made a huge transition to being radio friendly and I'm not against songs played on the radio but they are typically trash
