Laugh-ability aside, I deep down really wish the yamato put up more of a battle. I know its an impractical ship, with more guns than sense.

But it seriously looks badass. It looks like it could send over 200 shells just to open up, then send another 400 over just to check on the other guys.

That thing looks like what I imagine Arnold Schwarzeneggers cruising yacht would look like.

Battleships were made obsolete by first aircraft carriers and then even more so by Surface-to-surface missiles, since bith planes and missiles could fly further than the shells could.

The gun was made in 1915. Machine guns weren't exactly new and unfounded tech at that time. It shouldnt have been a miserable failure of a gun that it is.

The gun would jam performing even the lowest rates of fire to anything comparable. It was cheaply and poorly made, and even french/vichy forces would throw it on the ground the first moment they could.

I know about its performance from whatever history channel special thats from, but it was still an automatic weapon designed during a time when no one really understood them that well yet. particularly for lighter ones that could be carried around like a rifle. by the time WW2 came around it saw very limited use because it had long since been recognized as a bad weapon.

and then it doesn't need to be in a port again for an other three years, covering the entire globe with air superiority.

>>
>>683392219
Agreed, but with some caveats.

It was only two years later that the most reliable and well founded machine gun was invented, the browning.

The british would train daily with the french, in machine gun application and warfare. They would mock battle with them day in day out.

You would think, that after a couple of months testing, and checking out your neighbors far superior designs, that you would make some adjustments. Or at least, take in some feedback from your troops and redesign around their specs.

But no. The french bicycle company that designed and built the gun, continued to pump them out exactly as is. Well into the 30s.

The gun design was that bad, that its still lauded today as one of the worst designs for any weaponry around the era.

Oh, too, nice attempted derision with the history channel comment. What are you, 12? I know what im talking about son, regardless of how many history docos youve watched.

No, every other western country does. Because we've bought into lies.

Eastern countries try to prevent this with giant fucking firewalls, and launching constant cyberwarfare attacks on the infrastructure.

Other countries in Europe have loosened copyright law, media law and general law to allow for a more broader and open internet.

These laws go hand in hand with freedom and liberty.

There are also other western countries IE Australia, that limit their exposure and also are in discussions for setting up a firewall.

Every country spies on their citizens. Ill grant that. Its happened since day one.

But when a system can figure you out, down to your underwear size, what you ordered for breakfast several weeks ago, and bring up any financial transaction in your whole life, thats going a bit too far.

No the Iowa would win because it's superior radar based fire control system.

You make some fair points. Also, the power that IT companies (google, apple, microsoft, facebook etc) have in terms of information storage and sharing is huge.
Most people my age (45) that I know don't seem to have much of a clue about the nature and degree of this personal information collation.
I'm not quite sure on what kind of working relationship these companies have with various governments either. Although the recent Apple phone unlocking thing was interesting I got the feeling it was mainly a theatrical PR exercise by both sides.
>>
>>683402278
The apple unlocking thing was just the FBI forcing apples hand to give them a tool to do it easily.

The rumor mill out and about has had all types of encryption crack-able now for about five years.

One measily iphone, one small case. That shit was just drummed up so the public would accept a lesser concept of privacy.

The Iowa would have to close into range first, and the Yamato could withstand a lot more hits from the Iowa than the Iowa could from the Yamato. The Yamato was built specifically to be able to take on several US battleships at once

Because the yamato didn't fight the Iowa, it got gangbanged by 8 aircraft carriers, if the same thing happened to the Iowa it would sink too.

the question was about the Yamato vs the Iowa in a 1v1 fight
>>
>>683402845

Battle of Samar, Taffy 3's fire control systems allowed them close and place accurate fire on the Japanese.

The Iowa would have gang raped the Yamoto.

>>
>>683403613
The only thing I can see the yamato clearly has ever hit was its own planes.

How can you argue something is better just because its bigger.

Iowa had firing systems that could place a better, more accurate shot. It doesnt matter how much armor at that point, its a luck game vs accurate firing.

I would take aided and assisted firing over armor any day.

Another way to look at it:

You have a mortar, I have a hand gun. We are both at 100m.

Your going to be fuckin full of holes when I run upto you and unload my big hot cannon in your face.

Your mortar is bigger, but couldnt accurately hit the broad side of a stadium.

The advantage the Iowa had over the yamato in firecontrol wasn't major, just enought to give it an edgy when one side couldn't see the other. And, and that analogy is just stupid.

Try you with a slightly smaller and slightly more accurate mortor in a pillbox vs me in a slightly larger and slightly more armored pillbox, who would win? whoever gets the lucky shot in first.

The distance was rhetorical, it was a working example of large, unguided weapon, versus smaller accurate weapon.

but at 20 miles? I guess I would take the aided control still. Because apparently its still based off lucky shot.

So it would seem guidance would be the advantage. One hit can cripple a vessel, no matter the size or armor, you hit the right spot and its lights out.

>>
>>683406175

At long range the issue is that the ship you are trying to hit is taking evasive action. At that range it takes a minute for the shell to reach the target. And a ship like the Iowa is going about 30 knots, about 50 feet per second. In a minute it will travel 3000 feet.

Superior fire control means that the fire control team comes up with solutions sooner than the opponent. That allows for more aggressive evasive action.

True the targeting is still a big advantage, however one hit from the Yamato would have a much greater chance of crippling the Iowa than vice versa, and if a shot damaged the Iowa's radar system that advantage is out the window.

It would come down to which ship got the lucky hit first which nobody could know. The Iowa's better targeting and slightly higher rate of fire mean's it would be able to get more hits on the Yamato and have a greater chance of getting that lucky hit the longer the battle went on.

But the Yamato's greater range means that the Yamato would get the first shot off and have a better chance to hit that lucky shot early in the battle, and the Yamato's better armor and the Iowa's worse armor means that each hit on the Iowa would be more likely to be a 'lucky hit'.

But the Yamato would still win, the Iowa can't into space

Visible horizon is 12Nmi. With the velocity of the projectiles on that range, it takes about 30sec max to reach a target. Evasive actions with a BB is nearly nothing. The trick they used was deceptive paint to make it look like the ship is smaller and therefor harder to target. Steering makes it hard too, but allso to stear it's own guns and measure range, so...

She would have sunk any battleship that was near her.

>>
>>683410270
Battleship engagements started way before they were in visible range. Late war battleships used radar and spotter planes to target over the horizon, both the Yamato and the Iowa had gun ranges of over 20 miles

The Allies and the Italians fought a battle in the Mediterranean during WWII. Neither fleet could see the other.
Spotter planes called the fall of the shells.
The British attacked the Italian fleet at Taranto with carrier aircraft (slow old biplanes) and forced them to abandon the base.
