Before youtube became a business it was built on people filming shit in their basement and dicking off with WMM and it was probably the best time for it. The way the algorithms are now i find it almost impossible to find any channel that is worth watching. im not a complete hipster. I like a lot of the bigger channels but i miss watching videos like this one guy i used to watch. It was just some dude with long hair and a beard with multiple personality disorder and he would just talk about his day and tell stories about his life. I loved that shit. Ive since lost his channel and i actually doubt he does it anymore or has killed himself by now. I just miss being able to fuck off and find all kinds of weird videos that werent cancer ridden.

I can relate, OP. Back then in around 2009, the general youtube community didn't seem terrible to me. Today, I won't even look at the comments, not even on a dare. Also, most of the youtubers I knew back then had took a turn to the cancerous.

It's because it's more and more of a business, yes. In the old days they promoted channels regardless of number of subscribers or whatnot. But now YouTube wants to make money, so they're really only going to promote and suggest channels that advertise. Well, you can't monetize your videos until you have a certain number of subs. How do you get noticed and get subs? Luck. Come from another social media platform first. Get a shout out from an already established channel.
Are there still people out there making videos for fun? Sure. But the market of talent is over saturated, so they get buried. And it will only get worse from here.

Block all the shitty channels that youtube crams down your throat and forces into your suggestions. It takes time and literally 100 or so blocks but eventually youtube will just be shit that actually interests you and not pewdiepie and horrible "Top10 most" lists.
To block a channel go into the channel you want to block's main page
click "about"
then click on the little flag icon
I try to block a few shitty channels every day. After a few weeks of this youtube is pretty awesome again. Sometimes it takes a few hours for your blocks to take effect. Block channels will still appear right after you block them.

Most people don't understand how much work it is to put together a well edited and entertaining video. I had to put together a 20 minute long training video for my work and it took hours and hours to make.
All the different camera shots of the work being done, voice overs, a few graphs and diagrams that I had to draw up. It really adds up and before you know ti you have spent 10 hours making a video that is less than 30 minutes long.
To do that on a regular basis and put out more than 1 video a week demands that a person does it as a living.

I find it frustrating trying to find more obscure channels. A lot of content on the front page or content showing up in search results have millions of views. I have found a lot of really good small channels with only a few thousand views on their videos. But it takes a lot of searching trying to find these good small channels.
the thing i find about the guys bitching about "drama" is they are the same guys that bitched about reactions but did nothing.

these days i try to find channels that have actual content, sadly the guys that deserve it tend to be hard to find or dont make enough so what they produce is limited.

Nah. I know I've been tossing his name around a lot, but look at Gopher's channel. All he does are mod reviews and let's plays, and he basically lives off his videos. He doesn't yell, he's not an attention whore (I have no idea what he even looks like), he doesn't comment on social issues, he just does his one thing and does it very well, and he has a lot of subscribers because of it. The closest he ever comes to cancer is occasionally getting annoyed with a game he's LPing, but it's done genuinely and his reactions aren't canned, and he doesn't overblow things for attention.
I know that's just one guy, but you can make money without being cancer.
Though honestly I don't think YouTube should be seen as a career choice, it's a hobby.
