So much has happened and at the same time nothing has. The story already killed off so many characterd that it's not about the impending doom from the north anymore but about petty personal battles between idiots trying to one up another.

That's not the point dude. Death hasn't really mattered in the books since A Clash Of Kings. Equivalently, the second book, before the red wedding. It matters even less by the third book, there is an entire cut plotline that sees the resurrection of Catelynn Stark. the fourth and fifth books have so many fake-out deaths and telegraphs the resurrection of Jon Snow so hard that it's not even funny.
The point is, the show is a lot more eager to murder characters, but has been a lot more conservative with the way it handles death. In the books people have been getting rezzed this entire time.
Also, the show right now is only ahead in a couple of spots. Balon Greyjoy should have died two seasons ago. The kingsmoot should have happened, and the Greyjoys should have sent a fleet to Meereen by now.
The only EXTREMELY UNCHARTED TERRITORY in the show right now is Where Dany is, what Bran is doing, and Jon Snow being alive, you're right on the cusp of what may or may not be int he next book.
Sansa/Winterfell plots are totally off the rails and I don't want to sperg about book differences too much and it's just way too different that I have no idea where it is relative to the books.

There's bigger reasons in the story for him to come back. They just haven't been heavily explored in the show yet, just the books. It's not about the character's popularity, this shit was planned from the get-go.
All this magic just ruins it for me. I loved the start of the series where it felt more low-fantasy and "ah nah son magic and dragon and all that shit is dead and have been for a gorillion years", so when you saw the white walkers it felt so much bigger. So ancient.
