I majored in NEETdom, actually I have an AA, which means I dont really have a college degree. I did the prerequisites for business, IT, and music. Last semester after taking 3 depressing years off working shit jobs I tried to begin the prerequisites to get into an engineering program, but the classes were too hard too do while also working so I dropped the classes. All I ever really wanted to do in my life was write music, and I will never be able to feed myself because the only thing I'm good at isn't valued in society. I wanna die.

Auto Engineering fag here. Basically Mech Eng with further specific models. 6 weeks away from my final exam.

Landed a job as a broker. Worldwide travel, ridiculous money. Fuck being an engineer. I didn't suffer through this god tier degree just to be paid £30k starting, hoping to one day be chartered, putting my freedom and home on the line so I can build something nobody will ultimately give a shit about.

An engineering degree is a certificate of intelligence. I'm going to use it to actually have a good life. I have massive respect for anyone who actually goes on to become an engineer after an engineering degree, but it's kind of a fool's errand,
>>

Its never too late, I would look for an internship this summer still. If you don't get one don't worry. Just work on your resume by being active in clubs or any extra curricular that you can. most schools have Solar car and baha car teams that also look good for jobs.

Also total side note but IEEE has a whole bunch of competitions you can take part of. I dont know if your school has a senior project but at ours a group always does the IEEE robotics competition its a fun challenge and every job I have ever talked to loves to hear about it.

That's because physicists aren't interested in what they can build as much as how it all works. Some would say that engineering limits your knowledge of science to practical uses and blinds you to the larger ideas. It's actually kind of funny, as a physics major, my friends and I joke about giving up and becoming an engineer while the engineers joke about giving up and becoming physics majors.
>>
>>682073190
Zero chance. Someone has to fix the robot flying plane and robots are not known for crawling into small spaces and changing parts.

>>682073239
Congrats, but I would argue that a degree in certain fields, IE engineering and sciences, only guaranties a certain minimum income. so its more of a safety oriented approach. Plus there are ways of achieving these degrees with minimal debt. Community college is so worth it. No one ever cares that you go to one to get your gen eds.
>>
>>682073544

To all Computer Engineering and Computer Science people, the future is looking pretty worrying.

I'm a recent graduate (within a few years) and I work at a relatively big software company with good pay. But there is just so much work that is outsourced and there are just so many Indians here that I worry about our future. If you go to any freshmen class for CS, you'll see the classrooms are packed full and some students actually have to stand outside because there's no room. The CS program is massively getting dumbed down so that anyone can graduate with the degree. And worse, people are thinking CS is an easy ticket to a good job with high pay so they choose to major in CS without even liking it, or even worse "I like to play video games so I guess I'll major in CS". It's like the default major for those that don't know what to do but play video games.

Anyways, what you get is a market that's absolutely saturated with available low-quality workers (recent CS graduates, outsource, Indians, etc). The supply far exceeds the demand and therefore the companies are more than willing to offer low salary/benefits, it simply makes sense that companies can get more choosy if they have more options.

Not to mention CS is one of those fields that have a very, very short life-span for workers. Once you get to about 45-50 years old, you get laid off and replaced with a 22 year old recent grad.

Computer Engineering is also affected because realistically, almost all CpE majors get sucked into pure software jobs (like me).

The future is worrying, it's just going to continue to go downhill from here.

well i'm obviously biased but being surrounded by and working with music sounds better to me than with math. Also if you study music theory you realize that music is extremely mathematical, and I can see it to be similar to math theory, just a totally different language, if you will.

Nursing master race

to be fair though, system engineers are some of the smartest people going round. It's practically impossible to find an incompetent systems engineer

Wtf do you do in with a Philosophy major? Teach philosophy?
>>
>>682080074
nice story bro, i doubt it's the same in every country though
>>
>>682080074

As someone working for a US company from somewhere on a different hemisphere I can attest that the worrying is warranted.

From the UK and getting a degree in mental health nursing.

Alright, cool.

I'm an art major because I transferred and all the engineering majors at my school are impacted (and so is undeclared). I took a bunch of coding classes before transferring. That's pretty sad to read because I'm trying to switch over and I don't know if it will pay off.
>>
I worked as an audio engy and basically as an IT-engy too
didn't study in uni though, who needs that shit-
>>
>>682080074
Computer Science is pretty fucking worthless, the only people who can get anywhere decent are those who have lots of experience from working on their own. It's amazing how many Comp. Sci. people graduate and are less employable than mid teens who've actually been doing shit.

for America, perhaps, but I think the rest of the world is fine for a few more years
>>
>>682064769
I want to be military. Is it so bad?
>>
>>682081012
No. It's a noble cause. I'm not going military but I'm in a military family.
>>
>>682080872
Really now?
I thought it was a few years ago that a CS grad was someone who could at least do basic Java. My school's requirements are pretty tough.

Aerospace Engy here

Last job i pretty much did whatever the fuck i wanted. test random shit, break stuff, but pay was shit.

now i do some pretty sweet stuff, cutting edge r&d. well, I tell other people to do stuff for me. my main tool is outlook. still fun though, but i kinda prefer the hands on stuff. pay is good too, but not amazing.
>>
>>682064769
math, minor in computer science

a lot of fun actaully, if you like that kind of stuff of course
>>
>>682080872
agreed. Way too many of them. Computer eng is far better, and at least with that degree you can go into med, finance, whatever pretty much
>>
>>682064769
>What's your major
finance

some of those unbelievable - great tier are bs though, actuarial is clearly > applied > theoretical

all the hard sciences should be downgraded 2 tiers too because unless you want to work in academia they're aids
>>
>>682065348
Im studying that too, i feel you
>>
>>682068011
Biomedical Engineering too, shit is cash
>>
Is CIS still a good major or am i 20 years too late?
>>
>>682081360
Doesn't take much to beat "basic java".

Actually, let me quote something specific from a few days ago.
"I've have a pretty solid knowledge of programming and data structures. I'm just a hair short of a Bachelors in Computer Science focusing on Programming Languages. I've done things with C like manipulating memory with pointers, created data structures from scratch like linked lists, trees, etc. ..."
>>
>>682082388
yeah exactly, I heard most CS grads can't do fizzbuzz for some reason.
>>
>>682064769
Electrical Engineer reporting in (course was "electrical engineering and information technology", so there is also kind of an IT background)

>>682080074
Yes, you may be right for the majority of graduates. I see the same issue.
Therefore I try to get away from the common jobs and do more experienced stuff. Currently my job is about Embedded Device security and IT security. The company searches for people like crazy, because there are way too little specialists. The company also does a lot of consulting, so this may also be a chance in the future.

If I just wanted to be the code monkey, I would not have gone to university. Those jobs can be replaced and outsourced easily.
>>
>>682082122
how much money? also, can a computer engineer get into the medical-related engineering stuff?
>>
>>682064769
Applied mathematics, and I haven't found a job yet.
>>
>>682064769
Shit tier archivist here
>>
>>682083721
how long have you been looking? have you had an job offers?

studying that as well
>>
>>68206476
>Civil and mechanical engineering on the same tier
LOL. Whoever made this list is retarded as fuck.
