4chan has always been the alternative to the mainstream. Back in the day, politically, this was a ron paul board.
/pol/ is where the right can congregate, because liberalism is currently mainstream and conservative ideals are not acceptable to talk about openly with the age demographic that frequents places like this. Discussion on that board used to be of slightly higher quality, and it's slid from what it once was, but not as badly as /b/.
/b/ used to be a LOT different than it is now. It was definitely more random, with threads that weren't simply repeated pastas, and sometimes crazy stuff would happen. Not anymore. It's very censored now compared to what it once was. Those are the main differences I've noticed. Think I've been here since around 2008, but time's a blur.

SA has a forum called ADTRW, which stands for Anime Death Tentacle Rape Whorehouse, and as you can guess is populated by the most terrible autistic weeaboos known to man. It's hated even within the already autistic SA population.
Back in the early 2000s it was so bad that forum moderator Lowtax made it so that if you had posted in ADTRW in the last month you could only post in that forum. So it created this insular, bitter, neckbearded clique. Moot was an active poster at that time (I believe his poster name was Moot, or m00t, and he might even still have an account unless it got banned) and he created 4chan as a haven for these outcasted pedophiles. He based it off the Japanese imageboard 2chan, I think.

I've been here since Hal Turner and post in these threads once or twice a year. When I look at this site as it is now and think of how it was back then, it's been neutered. Whether that's because of anon culture coming into the mainstream, the FBI mods that actually do their job, or just how large the community has become and the huge percentage of that larger community not having the same experience, it's hard to say. CP used to be a nightly thing, loli had its own board, at one time /b/ was only 5 pages, then 10, then 15, then back down to 10. /z/ no longer exists at all, I remember every so often I would hop on and there'd be some crazy spam bot attacking the site and there'd be one thread on the board usually with Leonidas as the op picture, when people who liked dicks were called faggets, furries were shunned. I remember the first day that boxxy became popular and thinking to myself who the fuck is Boxxy, never thinking it would persist for years. The whole community's done a 180 from the time that I got here. Now I wouldn't say it's any more cancerous than it used to be, but it's a lot less original. Even though there are more people posting, the amount of new content whether it be memes, Trends, pastas, what have you there seem to be fewer people that can make good content and we all just kind of echo things from literally years ago. Reality was Everyone from SA had migrated across to 4chan. Early times 4chan used to be like best times FYAD.

This place feels like SA did about 5 years ago. The creative content is dying, people are migrating, its hard to tell were original content comes from anymore. SA is almost all but dead now. The funny hasn't left, the core people are still there, but we are all old now. And (mostly) have important shit to do... well more important than a 20 year old board.
Back in the old days there were defined borders, you stayed in your forum/chan/board, and you fought tooth and nail for it, or spent hours a day putting creative content in, because many lols would be had by all coming out.
