The Mare's Melancholy, pt 1
by Ryunnosuke

The worst day of Sunshine's life happened to occur on a bright and sunny day.
She had just woken up, licking her lips and yawning greatly. The fluff on her back itched horribly, as her babbehs squirmed around. Careful to not jostle her young ones, she lifted a hoof to nudge the sand and dirt out of her eyes.
Sunshine's burrow was one of the better ones in the herd; a hollowed out tree trunk with most of the earth underneath removed. It provided plenty of warmth and shade during the seasons, and was very comfortable. Every day that she woke up, Sunshine was thankful that she had a wonderful special friend that could provide shelter for their family.
A sudden rumble from her tummy prompted the mare to her feet; a subtle reminder that she needed nummies not just for herself, but to make milkies so her babbehs could grow up big and strong. Turning to the sleeping forms by her side, she quietly nudged them awake.
The two weanlings stirred slowly from their mother's prodding. Wasp and Blueberry were both young fluffies, weanlings who no longer needed their mumma's milk, but were too young to be toughies or attendants. The two colts were their father's joy; Blueberry was big and strong, and Wasp was fast and smart. Blueberry, with his stout frame and azure fluff, would ask everyday when he would get to be a toughie like his father, but she would tell him that he had to run and play, to become big and strong. Wasp, gangly with yellow fluff, could run faster than any fluffy his age, and liked to play word games with his friends. Even the smarty acknowledged the weanling's ability.
They blearily followed their mummah out to the communal area, where many other fluffy families were already gathering. As the sky ball's light fell on Sunshine's back, the itching resumed as the foals stirred.

There were four new additions to the family, but none of them were old enough to have names at the moment. Still, Sunshine knew her babbehs by touch, sight, and smell; the beautiful pink babbeh would make a pretty mare when she grew up, the green horny babbeh was quiet but loved to cuddle, the yellow babbeh was a loud crier (but at least he had a strong voice), and the purple babbeh was fat and healthy, the good markings of a future toughie.
The foals began chirping in hunger, as Sunshine sat down in the circle near the other nursing mothers.
"Nu wowwies babbehs, pwenty of miwkies for aww babbehs!" Sunshine smiled, assuring them with hugs as she moved them from her back to her teats. Wasp and Blueberry wandered off to play with their friends and pick at the grassies for their breakfast.
Sunshine's tummy grumbled again, startling her purple and yellow babbehs, who began crying loudly. The nursing mothers giggled at the sight of her wearily trying to calm them down, only to have them start up again when her tummy growled a third time. Thankfully, her friend Daisy came to her rescue. Daisy had had babbehs before, but wasn't expecting anytime soon; she was acting as an attendant. The attendants would watch the babbehs while the mummas ate, or go and fetch food if they weren't able to move under their own power. Sunshine gave Daisy a grateful hug, as she deposited a mouthful of grassies next to her. "Tank yuu, fwiend. Wuv fwiend!"
Daisy smiled and left to help the other mothers in need. Sunshine gobbled down the grassies quickly, while the foals nursed. Looking around, she saw Blueberry eagerly eating while Wasp chased a butterfly.
A wave of sadness overcame the mare. Soon, her older babbehs would be fluffies, and would go dig their own burrows and look for special friends of their own. The herd was large, and there were plenty of fillies for them to choose from.

Even with her hoovsies full with the newborns, she didn't want them to leave.
One of the other fluffy colts wandered close to Wasp. The two didn't see each other until it was too late. Sunshine gasped as they both tumbled to the ground, dazed. The other colts friends ran up, cheeks puffed, mistaking the accident for aggression. As they began to crowd the little pegasus, Blueberry stepped up. He was outnumbered, but still bigger and more menacing than the others. The colts stepped back, cowed, when the blue weanling puffed his cheeks. Wasp quickly stepped in, explaining the situation. Apologies were exchanged, and soon the whole group was hugging.
The mothers, Sunshine included, all murmured among themselves as the scene unfolded and ended in happiness. She could hear the other mothers babbling about how brave and good the colts were to be friends instead of meanies.
Sunshine could only smile. She had the bestest babbehs, who truly knew what it meant to be a fluffy. She had a special friend who loved and took care of her. And she had new babbehs, who loved her and needed her.
With a sudden realization, the mare concluded something that many fluffy mummas wanted to be, but may not ever become. She was a Bestest Mumma. The good sense of pride filled Sunshine like never before. Looking down at the mewling brood in her lap, she knew that as Bestest Mumma she would make these babbehs into Bestest Fluffies.
Everything was perfect.
Absolutely perfect.

And that's when the screaming started. The quiet before the storm was peaceful and serene, shattered by the piercing wail of dying agony.
One would think that immediate panic would set in, but that was not the case for this herd. They had enjoyed a long history of tranquility; toughies were only responsible for keeping the peace among other fluffies. The herd had settled here long ago because there were no munstas here and plenty of nummies for everyone.
Sunshine's heart dropped, fright clutching her heart. Fear was something this herd was unaccustomed to. However, it was hard to mistake the pain in the cries as they emanated from somewhere in the distance. The mothers who were awake and near the circle gathered their babbehs together and hugged them close. Other fluffies came slowly out of their burrows, shrugging off sleepiness. The ones playing and eating stopped still.
Everyone looked off into the distance. Straining to hear what was happening.
The Safe Place, where the herd gathered and where some made their homes, was protected by a copse of trees. It was an abandoned building, the walls smelled not pretty from rot and decay. The herd lived around the Safe Place, in various burrows or nests they had dug or built. However, when the big rainy times came the whole herd could take shelter in the Safe Place with no worries.
The Smarty said that it belonged to the 'hoomins' a long time ago. Sunshine had never seen a 'hoomin' in her life.
Until today.
A curious colt wandered near the tree line, trying to peek outside. The underbrush exploded in front of him, and a large brown creature with a wide mouth came barreling through. The colt stumbled backwards down the hill, taking a terrible tumble.
The herd stood transfixed at the munsta, curiosity and dread temporarily paralyzing them. It was big and muscular, with a slobbering, grinning mouth filled with sharp, pointy teeth. It tossed its head back and howled, loud and clear.

"Nu wike!" one of the mothers whined.
Another colt, the weanling of the mother that spoke, looked over at her in concern, before puffing his cheeks and marching up to the creature. "Dis fwuffy wand! Nuu be meanie an' nuu make woud noises, pwease!"
The munsta finished its cry, before looking down at the little stallion with large brown eyes.
A bad feeling crept over Sunshine. It felt like it was a bad idea to be near the newcomer.
Other colts and a few fillies started to gather behind the brave fluffy, all of them staring. "Dis fwuffy wand!" the colt repeated. "Weave nao, pwease!"
The creature heaved and sighed with heavy breathing, but made no move to leave.
The colt stamped his feet, face scrunched in anger. It had been a long while since she had seen any fluffy that angry in a long time. "Weave! WEAVE, PWEASE!" the fluffy screeched, to no avail.
"WEAV-"
Suddenly, the munsta snapped its jaws onto the colt. Teeth dug into the surprised and stunned fluffy's eyes and face. He would have yelled in surprise if he could, but the herd watched in horror as the munsta twisted its neck in rapid fashion, rag dolling the brave colt in a shower of boo boo juice.
A moment later the munsta stopped its thrashing, the body of the little stallion hanging limply in its mouth.
A collective scream echoed throughout the clearing; panic ensued. The mothers desperately gathered up their babbehs, while some abandoned them and ran. The fluffies were all awake now and running for the Safe Place.
Quite a few were frozen in fear, including Sunshine. She might have stayed that way if she didn't recognized a blue colored blur running towards the munsta.

"Bwuebewwy, NUU! Come to Mumma, PWEASE!" Sunshine cried, reaching out to her big babbeh in the distance. "BWUEBEWWY!"
Blueberry stopped, hesitating, and Sunshine finally saw why he was running forward; a group of the Smarty's toughies were charging the creature. Some were already attacking it, bucking with their mighty leggies. Sunshine recognized her special friend among them.
"Nu wowwies, Mumma!" Blueberry called back. "Bwuebewwy am toughie nao! Bwuebewwy am big and stwong! Bwuebewwy pwotect Mumma and babbehs!"
And then he was off, running to join the toughies.
Sunshine ran too. She ran forward, to pull Blueberry back if she had to.
Vaguely she heard Wasp shrieking for her, but she couldn't find the will to care; Wasp would be fine, he was smart.
She knew only one thing.
She was the Bestest Mumma. And she knew that her babbeh shouldn't go anywhere near that terrible Munsta.
The Munsta grasped and shook another fluffy into oblivion; the boo boo juice covered pile of fur that was leftover was barely recognizable.
"Bwuebewwy!" she called. She couldn't catch up to him; he had put too much distance between them. She was also out of shape from foal rearing.
The toughies were putting up a fight, but were losing badly. However, they were buying precious time for the herd to escape. The Munsta slowly crept up to them, making the ones in front back up nervously.
"Bwuebewwy!" Sunshine yelled. The weanling barreled towards the Munsta's unguarded side.
If he could collide and push the Munsta, it could go tumbling down the uneven ground.
If they could pin the Munsta, maybe they could beat it.

If Blueberry could knock it down...
"BWUEBEWWY!" It was a scream filled with hope and terror.
Out of the brush, two more Munstas emerged. Blueberry skidded to a halt, but he was flanked by the two new threats; they leveled glaring yellow eyes on him and growled menacingly.
"M-m-muh-muh-mumma.... mumma..." the blue colt whimpered, as wetness dampened his bottom.
Sunshine stood shocked, frozen in time. She wailed for her body to move, but it refused.
Her mind and body numbed, it didn't surprise her when yet another figure entered the copse; a tall, gangly figure, covered in orange... not-fluff.
Amazingly, it spoke.
"Found them!"

Ok, I've given up hope that we're going to create fluffies irl, but what about a video game? It could be in a 'sandbox' style, where you would create fluffies, then have various tools at your disposal, from sketties to sorry sticks. And they would have all sorts of reactions, from 'wuv yu' to 'wan die'.
>>
>>680053438
Wouldn't that get boring somewhat quickly with fixed tools and somewhat fixed reactions?

>>680053438

I can't go into specifics, but it's doable and is being done in certain places. Not fluffies per se but the idea of a perfectly loving biotoy with limited intelligence and genetically inbuilt concepts is a billion dollar idea, let's just say that it's a work in progress and from what I've seen nobody who's ever posted on one of these threads is getting one :P

>>
>>680055023
I wouldn't know, probably longer. Genetic diversity is a huge problem with artificial organisms, for that matter so is viral contamination.

>>680055123
I'm well aware of that, the goal is to create a creature smart enough to love people, talk, and give companionship while being smart enough to keep itself out of trouble and follow basic orders.

>>680055436
None, there are numerous barriers to this sort of thing. You *might* see artificially intelligent creatures by 2020, but the first corporation to roll one of those things out will spend 200M+ on legal battles over whether it's ethical or not.

Even then, I doubt preprogrammed concepts like in fluffies will be implemented, on the plus side, litterbox duty probably will.
>>
>>680055812
Have you got to the point of creating a creature with the ability to speak, even if it was a monstrousity?
>>
>>680053865
flash doesn't have nearly the capabilities for something like that. You'd need multiple simulation engines running parallel and several huge tables for keeping track of breeding combos, different reactions from the various genomes (the smarties would be a nightmare to code, namely with their controlling factors), and all of the actions associated with the various other combinations. It's not an impossible feat. In fact code like that exists already in places. But it would need to be a VERY big budget game, so it's unlikely we'd see something so niche ever hit market, unless an indie team picks up the concept and has lots of time to blow.
>>
>>680056042
ed....ward?
>>
>>680056229
Yes?
>>
>>680056042
I can't say, other than to remind you that Mice have been given (mostly) human speech centers in the past.

Theoretically were somebody to give a creature human speech centers (or a homologue of one) and the correct vocal cord configuration that creature would be able to speak, if only in babbles. It takes the whole package to be able to speak words.

If a creature were to possess that package (or a homologue of it) then it would be highly illegal and would prompt a legal battle that would make Roe vs. Wade look like a child's dispute.
>>
>>680055812
>the goal is to create a creature smart enough to love people, talk, and give companionship while being smart enough to keep itself out of trouble and follow basic orders.
What advancements would you say that have been accomplished so far towards reaching said goal?
>>
>>680056061
I have no idea why you read that to be so complex, or why you'd think the solution would be so heavy if you did read it correctly (I'm not saying it wouldn't be very complex though).

I'm surprised nobody is biting on my offer to make a game, though.
>>
>>680056605
But it would not matter of illegal or unethical it is if it happens in closed doors. No one would ever know you creatured a talking abomination.
>>
>>680055812
>the goal is to create a creature smart enough to love people, talk, and give companionship while being smart enough to keep itself out of trouble and follow basic orders.
See, the biggest issue here is the language the creature uses. Would it be a unique language such as English or could they have their "Spanish versions", for example?
>>
>>680057029
How would one go about preprogramming a language? AFAIK it's reasonable to train it to associate good things with actions that you want, but language seems too abstract. I'd imagine each one would have to learn whatever language like a small child.
>>
>>680056662
I'm not at liberty to say, other than if hypothetically me or my colleagues were engaged in research of that nature it would be possible by my own estimate to create a creature meeting those basic requirements within a decade.

>>680056838
Those sort of things don't get funded in the dark, anyone trying to create such a creature is either being funded by DARPA, or is being funded by an undisclosed corporation in hopes of selling it for massive profit, either way John Q public will know about it eventually..

>>680057029
Theoretically such a creature would learn a language from its native speakers, perhaps you might see a sort of "school" set up to teach a language. If you could implant a variety of words into from birth then the problem is fixed easily.
>>
>>680057345
I have to agree with this anon, implementing a language from birth is (to my knowledge) beyond the ability of modern science. That being said, if someone *had* made a breakthrough on it I would be unlikely to know and would not be able to discuss it at any rate.
>>
>>680057425
That's what I figured. Only incredibly basic words from birth could be done though, if even that (understanding language with artificial neural networks is a hard task, so good luck with those phonetic sequence associations!) since you have no concepts to build up from, only vague associations.
>>
>>680057425
But is it even possible for this creature to learn to say "Hello", have you seen any kind of very basic language in a man made creation?
>>
>>680057735
I doubt it's possible at all, without magical direct brain wiring in genes to a very high degree, and trying to do it even so or otherwise would be like building windows in hardware. Of course, I'm not incredibly informed with these things.
>>
>>680056662
>the goal is to create a creature smart enough to love people, talk, and give companionship while being smart enough to keep itself out of trouble and follow basic orders.
See, the biggest problem here is that it would be so incredibly heavily regulated it would not be worth the money of creation to sell them.
>>
>>680058097
Let's hypothesize for a second here. Let's assume that I had programmed an artificial organism to say the word "hello" to me when I clap my hands. The underlying meaning would not be apparent to creature and most likely it would be confused about it had just mouthed those sounds, especially if it were as intelligent as fluffies are depicted.

It would, completely hypothetically, be much easier to set up a place of learning to teach the said creatures. The only alternative is pouring millions into an advance that may not happen for another decade.

The choice is easy for anyone looking at it from a profit angle.
>>
>>680058958
But creating an artificial organism with any ability -whatsoever- to learn and comprehend, let alone speak, is literally impossible. It is not something achievable, no matter how much money you pour into its creation.
>>
>>680058957
Perhaps if one were to do something like this it would easier to say, cut a deal with an unnamed government to allow the selling over your undetermined genetic monstrosity in exchange for handing over undisclosed advances that would doubtless be very appreciated in a military setting.
>>
>>680059455
That's debatable. Define "creating" and "artificial organism".
>>
>>680059455
Indeed, we humans have been decades trying to create intelligent life forms remotely similar with no success whatsoever.
>>
>>680059455
The human brain, and with it the ability to speak, are just very complicated very wet machines. A machine can be understood and possibly ever reproduced once the appropriate underlying mechanisms are understood. Speech and comprehension are far from impossible to replicate or understand.
>>
>>680059877

>>
Uh, guys, I think it would make more sense to go from the highly speculative notion of creating real fluffies to the much more feasible concept of making a fluffy video game.
>>
>>680060595
Any creature remotely similar to this "Fluffy" things, even without the ability to communicate with anything else than grunts.
>>
>>680060682
A fluffy video game is actually even less possible than anything resembling a real Fluffy, for at least the first option is being heavily funded to become a reality whilst the second one is not.
>>
>>680061242
Something like this would have to be created sterile (which would drive up costs per unit) or have very limited contraints on what they require to live, lest we have a population of talking vermin

Making an actual fluffy isn't expensive? Video game development is outrageously expensive? I'm not sure what you're talking about. You're vastly overestimating both the scope of what we're talking about and the difficulty of implementing what I think you think we're talking about.

>>
>>680061824
Mechanical methods are cheaper. It's much simpler to have an active breeding group and spay/neuter outgoing animals than it is to grow "test tube" creatures for a fixed price per animal.

>>680062083

>>
>>680063430
What about something like this, like the other anon said?

http://www.dragon-mango.com/ponygame/fluffy/petshop.swf
>>
>>680063103

For this kind of game, the more physics and flexibility it had, the better. Stuff like getting hurt while playing, stepping on bad poopies, getting sick and falling from ledges would be a constant threat to fluffies, and with your imprecise handling they could even get hurt by just careless tossing around.

You could have different orders for fluffies, and different rewards for fulfilling them: Fluffies of specific colors and type would fulfill easiest contracts, while higher paying ones would specifically require healthy and happy fluffies. For a "gameplay as metaphor" detail, the game shouldn't have a "snake food" option or any catch-all contract, so some fluffies would inevitably end up being worthless.
>>
>>680063574
Holy crap, it already exists.
That's the Internet for you.
>>
>>680063968

With physics, I don't mean anything really complicated, just that objects could be moved and would interact with each other. A litterbox next to bed would make sleeping there uncomfortable, spaghetti or toys on a shelf in fluffies view would tease them, and having too little space would make playing with ball tedious and frustrating.
>>
>>680064370
Well, it KIND of exists. As you can see, it is WOEFULLY limited, maybe you could expand upon it?

I have thought about a Fruit Ninja -level of simple game if you'd rather start with something smaller:

You are trying to get hired for a fluffy shelter, and in order to get in you must prove your ability to castrate as many fluffies in a short time as you can. The game view would be an upright view of a pen, where new fluffies were periodically tossed with a box from outside the screen. The fluffies in the pen would run around, hug, cry, and cover their eyes, while you would need to click the uncastrated fluffies when their backside is towards you. Clicking them while their when their gonads aren't exposed (either because the fluffy isn't facing you or doesn't have them anymore) smacks it and sends it spinning, hopefully revealing its rear end to you. Smack a fluffy too many times and it dies, reducing your score.

The difficulty would come from the ever-increasing amount of fluffies on screen, and keeping track of which ones you have already dealt with.

In the end you would get your stats about fluffies castrated and fluffies killed, and a grade according to your score. Positive scores would go from "unpaid intern" to "employee" to "God of infertility", while negative scores would go from "thrown out" to "sued for damages" to "mandatory anger management".

The main sounds needed would be slicing sound, hitting sound and fluffy pain screams. Extra ambient noise could be fluffies babbling, at first confused, fading to increasingly panicked as the screen gets fuller and the amount of crying and castrated fluffies grows larger.

This would be a fitting music if you wanted to use it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA2DcZVw9AU

It's terribly laggy and not quite working properly, but I see where it's going. Where would everybody like to see such a thing go? Just more things to put in?

What do other people think of this?

The idea is great except for the music. What interests me the most about your idea curiously enough is to see the interaction of said fluffies with other fluffies, the environment and you. It also ellicits a lot in interest the idea of hearing what does a fluffy sound like when they speak.

I wanna fug that anon

It would be very interesting for the game to sound and have audible fluffy speak.

I think it is not a question of cuantity but quality, having the fluffies just interact with one another and with everything around them accordingly.

I believe you'll find it's a dog.

Personally I've always avoided those situations, since I think any fluffy voice would be disappointing, like a noodle incedent.

>So would this include breeder parts, or is this resale?

Breeding would definitely help, as having to handle breeding, mummahs and babbehs would be great. They would definitely be fun, but if you don't want to have to program them just a shelter where random colored fluffies would be delivered would work too.

>Im getting that the purpose is to keep the painfully fragile fluffies alive and well, for some sort of profit.

Exactly! Trying to do your best keeping them alive, but understanding that "acceptable losses" occur and ultimately what makes the profit is not keeping them alive but making sales. The extra price for delivering happy and well-stimulated fluffies would be necessary to keep the player from just locking them all in padded cells to keep them safe.

>What drives the input/output more specifically?

What do you mean with that?

>How would the controls actually work?

Clicking on an object would "grab" it, making it follow the cursors with rubberband physics. Things like pouring kibble and filling waterbowls would be messy affairs, not to mention handling, washing and punishing/rewarding the fluffies themselves.

What actually drives profit, assuming in the game income is a main objective.

I have tried making fluffy sounds for another project by saying the lines veerryy sloowwlyy and then running them at half speed. Here's some samples: First the sendspace url and then /file/mlsl62
