There might be an element of parody in these, but I think a better analogy would be with the Touhou fanbase and Yukkuris. Some pictures caught on and people made stories for them.

another anon here - I wouldn't recommend getting PA even if you're bad at RTS games in general.
The artstyle is very cute, but the units don't really have a good rock-paper-scissors interaction so you end up with the SupCom armyblobs anyways.
The tiny-planet perspective is also beautiful for screenshots, but terrible for gameplay - distance estimation looks retarded and VERY unintuitive in comparison to other RTSs.
Kind of a hit-and-miss, which is why it wasn't a commercial success.

I liked it more. I mean, it's an attempt to create a more massive scaled world where you can play RTS battles. One of the things I expected was ACTUAL orbital combat, not those Avenger blobs in your home planet.
Anyway, when playing 1v1, just one planet, you can very well see the rock-paper-scissors (Air>Bots, Vehicles>Bots, Bots (en masse)>Buildings/Metal Extractors/Static defenses, Artillery>Buildings...)
Also: Pelter creep/Umbrella creep is one of the most anxiety-inducing experiences of all time.
