>Bach
>not the greatest musician of all time
wrote nearly 300 hours of music, half a month of non stop music, amongst which is the most complex, creative, original and expansive music ever

>pretty much universally renowned as the best composer ever and was thought of as the greatest organ player alive at his time

no person has ever mastered any art the way Bach did with music, his effortless cyclic modulations weaved together with melody after melody create tapestries that nobody else has ever been able to come close to

widely considered the epitome of cello music, violin music, keyboard music, choral music, lute/classical guitar music (even though it wasn't even fucking invented while he lived) secular academic/educational music and holy music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUHQ2ybTejU

Bach probably had autism too

he wrote over an hour of fugue using is own name as the theme (his name B-A-C-H, where H is actually played as B flat as it was labelled H in germany at the time)

there are many other examples of him writing riddles, anagrams, palindromes etc in his music and letters

yet humanity sent more beethoven music to outer space. master anything doesn't matter if you can't prove it. Beethoven might not be as much of a master with such a wide range in every category, but his music has such a depth of emotion you suddenly remember THAT'S the point of music.

EMOTION not MATHEMATICS. So yeah, there's a reason why humans prefer Great over Good.

Bob is the greatest musician ever... when I'm drinking. He's usually followed by gordon lightfoot and jackson browne if it's a sad drunk.

This guy deserves a lot of credit for being a hard-working, overall great fucking guy(like Grohl). Not the best musician tho by a long shot.

Bowie was a fucking genius but he's not just a musician... more of a great performer and artist overall.

curious what you guys thinks makes a great musician? are we talking entertainer skills, ability to play N notes per second, or ability to emotionally move people?

Look at Frank Zappa. Fucking amazing creature. Amazing musician. Not always very approachable.

>beethoven and mozart considered Bach the best anyway

Yes, yes, everyone thought Bach was the bees knees back then and his contributions to music are probably more significant than any other composer; but that doesn't change the fact that music evolved and surpassed him. I'd be curious to see what he could do if he lived in the 19th or 20th century as it is though I'd much rather listen to Ludwig.

>all there songs
they have like what, ten albums? most songs are more structurally complex than usual songs, especially of the time, both horizontally in terms of instrumentation and structurally

even the few songs they did steal, 90% of the music was new, what's more most songs are not original at all anyway, the songs they stole for example are blues songs, blues is notorious for being the same music over and over, that's blues for you, you could say the same thing about loads of bands

like how lynyrd skynyrd's sweet home alabama sounds very similar to led zeppelin's earlier song your time is gonna come

get over it tbh

zep stole all of their music... just like nearly every musician ever. That's one reason musicians are such sensitive pricks, they know they only rearrange shit. They did, however, bring a lot of good music to the world. The people who they 'ripped off' made money too by association and increased interest. Beats being forgotten.

LZ also got women hot as fuck. I don't see any faggot hipster bands doing that now. Even though RP looked like a woman, the ladies loved him. Same with JP. Sad to think there will never be another band with the force of LZ.

music as a whole evolved, but Bach himself can be taken out of the evolution for music, since his works can be as romantic as beethoven, chopin, liszt or rachmaninoff

english suite 6 for example is approached in a baroque way but is so dense and well made that it exudes romanticism, the second half of the prelude, the two gavottes, they're almost using modulation as a melody itself, essentially being keyless or close to it as rach would have done 150 years later

I don't deny that beethoven is great, but to say the famous opening of the 5th symphony doesn't borrow from the emotion of the opening to toccata in D for example is wrong, Bach did it before him, his vision was just as grand and emotional

People don't like Grateful Dead because their music makes you feel humble, and like you want to share and help others.

I've never done drugs in my life and I adore them.
Their music is pure and sweet, so when someone calls their songs shitty, I question their inner personality... Like maybe that person isn't pure and sweet, and that's why they prefer to listen to self-centered music.

Again, the Dead is smart music for enlightened minds.

Agreed. Bluegrass, country, and gospel will never hear Ripple or Brokedown Palace, because of the band's name--Grateful Dead.
While Pink Floyd fans may be disappointed to realize a band with such a name has bluegrass roots and influence.

Least commercial band ever. Most definitely the most interesting band. I love how they were just themselves, and played what they wanted.
They lived the true American dream of crafting their own brand, and creating a unique style of music. And their fans are legendary.
