If you're unemployed, you should use it to go back to school, for SOMETHING, just so when you show your resume you can fill in a gap with "school" and you can probably get a campus job of some sort if your school has an on-campus work option through financial aid. Now $12,000 may not cover much but it can get you in the door for one or two semesters at a state college or even more at a community college. You'll still be broke but you won't have the stigma of being unemployed.
Buy a few garages and let people park their car in there for a monthly fee.
My friend bought 6 garages for 10k and he makes around €700 a month of it.
Just imagine when you do this for a few years and have expanded your business.
