I'm not the anon in question, but i would like to point out something out about the manual vs automatic transmission subject. I drive a manual car, and I honestly don't think that is taking my focus away from the road, I actually think that it forces to focus more on it. With a manual transmission you have to focus on what you are doing, because a mistake could make the car stall (not a big problem, but it's annoying). I drive in a big city with lot of traffic lights and traffic, so I know what's like to push the clutch pedal every time I stop and carefully lifting it up to run a few meters, but it's not a big deal (at least for me). I honestly prefer manual transmission because uses less fuel (if you use it properly), it gives more control on what your car is doing and what you want to make it to do. I think that the driving test should be done on a manual transmission, because it's important to understand how a car works (basic knowledge that manual transmission forces you to have) and because one you learn how to drive it you can drive both type of transmission. But, don't misunderstand me, i don't hate the automatic transmission, i think that is very useful in some cases. Nowadays cars are equipped with more and more gears, that with a manual transmission would'n be possible to handle (7-8 or even 9 gears and more). Automatic are good for a smooth ride, so in luxury cars is a good thing, you wouldn't have that annoying liftoff at every gear change. Also, if you simply can't drive with a manual transmission because it's too much for you (and it's normal, many people can't do many things) it's better to have n automatic and drive well than having a manual and constantly stall the car and make gears grind. I prefer to have a manual transmission on a small car (like the Fiat Panda or the Ford Fiesta) and an automatic transmission on a big car (like Mercedes' or BMW's or Audi's).
