Depends. If your opponent is wearing metal armour then the katana isn't gonna do much good. Also the katana will bend more easily if you stab someone and they twist. Katana is best against lightly armoured opponents. Longsword is better against armoured opponents in general

Katanas were used as a hacking tool when the Pikes and Nagitas broke. I later became a status symbol for the Rich and powerfull but as a combat weapon it's kinda shitty.

Samurai (at least the ones actually trained in Kenjutsu) would develop footwork to avoid blades and slice at weak points (think the armor-less spaces under arms). The sword itself is really irrelevant. A master of Kenjutsu vs a master in European swordsmanship is kind of a toss-up.

Katana's tend to have better draw cutting and slashing capabilities whilst Longswords tend to be lighter and have better reach and better handguard... Against plate armoured enemies, they're kinda both useless though in history there has been records where longswords have been used to bash a motherfucker in the head using the handguards, against plebs, it's likely more that a katana would be more effective

Longswords worked in Europe based on the armor and military compositions at the time, and the katana the same in Japan.

neither. They are designed for different purposes. Katanas are cutting swords made with the intention of slashing through the lighter armors worn by footsoldiers and other samurai. Longswords were designed to be sturdy and slender so they could be wedged inbetween the metal plates of platemail through a technique called half-swording, where a metal-gloved hand grips the blade of the weapon to provide leverage when stabbing.
A Katana would be ineffective against platemail, as it wouldn't be able to slice through the armor and the user would have trouble striking inbetween the metal plates as halfswording would be ineffective without steel armor of their own.
Longswords, which are much weightier than katanas would be unruly when fighting a lighter armored soldier who has a better range of movement, and the advantage of longswords, being able to halfsword with them, would be moot since the armor they are up against wouldn't have plates that would need to be stabbed through.
TL;DR: swords and other weapons have advantages and disadvantages and thus cannot be better than another.

This would force the handle inwards to to the body easily slipping from the finger since the thumb isnt wrapping around the grip (possibly even loosing all grip of the sword). Im not saying its terrible idea im just pointing out disadvantages. IMO the most ideal weapon would be either a broadsword or roman gladius. They can essentially cover all grounds, without being to big. . It can stab, slash (both sides) and pierce armor, They're short enough to fit in tight areas and light enough to carry a shield or dagger secondary. Obviously it has weakness and can be countered but no other weapons are as well rounded. A talented swordsman could make it work no matter his opponent.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Most people don't know anything about swords in this thread so I need to inform you a little bit.
Firstly katanas are very odd swords. They are 2 handed but almost as long as a regular EU one-handed sword. So they have very little reach capacity compered to long sword.
Secondly they are faster than a longsword but only slightly faster than a one-handed sword. So they don't have a speed advantage to other sword. How fast you can swing that sword is upto you. If you are a good swordsman you are fast on both swords, if you're not you are slow on both.
Thirdly they are actually heavier than a one-handed sword despite the fact that they are almost same size.
So katanas are only swords. Not better than EU or Middle-Eastern swords. They are just Ok. Not good, not bad. Also there is better Japenese swords you can use out there.
So what is the most superior sword you might. ask
There is no best sword in the world, they all have cons and pros. But in the old times, Middle eastern adnd Indian sowrds considered very good swords.
Indian Tulwas, Arabian scimitars, and Turkish yatagans are pretty good swords. Other than that sabres and repiers are good too.
