Its not CG, That movie, The Andromeda Strain, was from 1971, before they had any real special effects.
What they did to make the monkey seem to die from the exposure to the virus, was to blow CO2 gas at it and fill the larger box that the cage was sitting in. The gas filled up the box and the monkey began to suffocate. Thats why he kinda keels over and the clip ends. In the film, the shot pulls away to see the horror of the scientists about how fast the virus kills. Off camera and after the shot, the trainers pull the boards off the sides of the box and blow oxygen at the monkey and he wakes up, just fine. It looks real, but he just went to sleep for a minute, and didn't have enough time to go into hypoxia.

THe movie is okay for its day, because having a heavily contagious and aggressive virus was a new thing and not even remotely thought of in modern culture. Noone had any idea what to do about any thing like that, and the movie made a few good predictions on how they could handle something like that.
But...... the whole scene with the lasers really killed it for me. That was stupid, even for that time...
