Look, going back to my original point, you still need to give details in your writing so that you can paint a picture. In the case of Hemingway, he gave enough detail in his writing and the reader filled in the blank in their own head. His writing is not devoid of detail. If he did omit all detail in his writing, he wouldn't be known for anything because people wouldn't read his work since it would be very 'robotic' in nature that would leave far too much ambiguity.

Whether or not he is poor is actually crucial to the story. This is a man who never had very much, and what little he had has suddenly been taken away from him. Hence why he refuses to go with the trucks towards Barcelona ("I know no one in that direction.") and instead decides to sit down and accept death.
