This is actually a serious question: how fucked would you guys have been if someone other than Putin had assumed the presidency in 2000? When I was a child in the 1990s, I remember hearing about news in Russia under Yeltsin's administration, and it was all about old Soviet nuclear weapons potentially falling into the hands of terrorists and expectations that Russia would be breaking up into several smaller countries any time now. Then once Putin got in office, it seems like things just got more stable and the country started heading in a more definite direction. Is my perception of that totally wrong? Were things basically heading in a better direction anyway regardless of who was in charge, or does Putin personally deserve a lot of the credit? Hopefully that all made sense.

It mostly depend on the generation. Generally, older generations are more religious and care more about traditions, while newer generations dont care about it much. Social stratums also matter. Underclasses are usually more religious, than upper classes. So in modern russia, christianity is definetely losing its positions, still playing a major role for older generations, however.
