To be blunt, a lot of it is quite boring, certainly when you start. It's a lot to do with learning texts and mantras (sort of) to give a guidance on how to live a more productive life. The intentions are all very positive. Masons do a lot for the community, more than you may know. If there are members, or even friends or family members of members of our lodge, who are going through hardship, the lodge will do what it can to help, whether it be financial, support, professional help etc. This is why it's important to get the right people in the lodge, so everyone has the same mindset towards things.

I got invited to be a Freemason by a buddy a few years back. When I rejected his offer, he was pretty hurt. He said it's a big honor to be invited to be one, as he's currently pretty high up.
He said they help each other out, and that the dues are small in comparison to the benefits. He said I'd have friends for life.
Thing is, I'm still not sure that there isn't some high level grand financial/social manipulation going on within it.
He said the invite is always there, should I want to take him up on it. It's been 6 years since he asked me, but he's kept the door open to communication since.
